Interview with Jessica Brody

Help us get to know Ryn and Xander. What 5 facts for each of them do we need to know?

Ooh, this is fun!

1. Animal is his favorite Muppet
2. He’s always wanted a personal Mozzarella Stick chef
3. His parents are world-famous child psychologists and authors of the notorious Kids Come First books
4. He likes to break rules.
5. He has a Doctor Who Tardis phone case (because he loves the show)

1. She loves to draw (or used to)
2. She’s obsessed with googling questions on her phone (it’s a coping mechanism)
3. She still talks to her dead best friend (in her mind.)
4. She’s a vegetarian (as of eleven months ago)
5. She has a Doctor Who Tardis phone case (but hates the show)

The Chaos of Standing Still is set around the holidays. What personal holiday moments/traditions are incorporated into the story?

Strangely enough, NONE! The book takes place on New Year’s Eve, but for Ryn, it’s not New Year’s Eve. It’s the one year anniversary of her best friend’s death. That’s all this day is to her. And she’s so focused on getting through this day in one piece, she doesn’t even think about the fact that it’s a holiday. So there was really no space for me to include anything personal relating to the holidays.

Although I will say my favorite holiday tradition is watching Love Actually. My family watches it every year. Maybe I’ll be able to work that into a future book.

What was your research process like for this story considering the setting and sub plots?

So, I’ll just preface this by saying I’ve spent a LOT of time in the Denver Airport. A LOT! I’ve lived in Denver for the past six years (plus I grew up there!) so it’s been my hometown airport for most of my life. Plus, I have a friend who’s a flight attendant and for a while I was listed as her “companion.” Meaning, I got to fly for free IF there was open space on the plane. So that resulted in a LOT of waiting around in the airport for a flight with empty seats—sometimes all day. I got to know that airport inside and out. So I guess you could say that I did my research on the setting of this book before I even realized I was going to write the book. I know every inch of that airport and I tried to put as much of it as I could into the story.

I did, however, have to research what happens at the Denver Airport during a snow storm, because fortunately I’ve never actually been stuck there. I interviewed someone who worked in media relations for the Denver Airport to ask about the procedures and protocols for blizzards and I got a lot of information from that interview about what happens when the airport has to close due to weather

Although, I will say that some details about the airport I had to make up and take some fictional license to make the plot more interesting. Like for instance, I’m pretty sure the airport police doesn’t arrest you for riding the airport train around more than three times in a row, like they do with Ryn and Xander. But it just made for so much better drama!

The Chaos of Standing Still
by Jessica Brody
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: November 28th 2017
Over the course of one chaotic night stranded at the Denver airport, Ryn confronts her shattered past thanks to the charm of romance, the uniqueness of strangers, and the magic of ordinary places in this stunning novel from the author of Boys of Summer.

Ryn has one unread text message on her phone. And it’s been there for almost a year.

She hasn’t tried to read it. She can’t. She won’t. Because that one message is the last thing her best friend ever said to her before she died.

But as Ryn finds herself trapped in the Denver International Airport on New Year’s Eve thanks to a never-ending blizzard on the one-year anniversary of her best friend’s death, fate literally runs into her.

And his name is Xander.

When the two accidentally swap phones, Ryn and Xander are thrust into the chaos of an unforgettable all-night adventure, filled with charming and mysterious strangers, a secret New Year’s Eve bash, and a possible Illuminati conspiracy hidden within the Denver airport. But as the bizarre night continues, all Ryn can think about is that one unread text message. It follows her wherever she goes, because Ryn can’t get her brilliantly wild and free-spirited best friend out of her head.

Ryn can’t move on.

But tonight, for the first time ever, she’s trying. And maybe that’s a start.

As moving as it is funny, The Chaos of Standing Still is a heartwarming story about the earth-shattering challenges life throws at us—and the unexpected strangers who help us along the way.
Jessica Brody knew from a young age that she wanted to be a writer. She started self “publishing” her own books when she was seven years old, binding the pages together with cardboard, wallpaper samples, and electrical tape.

After graduating from Smith College in 2001 where she double majored in Economics and French and minored in Japanese, Jessica later went on to work for MGM Studios as a Manager of Acquisitions and Business Development. In May of 2005, Jessica quit her job to follow her dream of becoming a published author.

Since then, Jessica has sold over twelve novels for teens, tweens, and adults including 52 Reasons to Hate My Father, The Karma Club, My Life Undecided, and the three books in the Unremembered trilogy, the first of which is currently in development as a major motion picture by the producers of The Vampire Academy, Zero Dark Thirty, Life of Pi, and Slumdog Millionaire. In 2016, she will release two new contemporary novels, A Week of Mondays (August) and Boys of Summer (April), and in 2017, her debut middle grade novel entitled, Addie Bell’s Shortcut to Growing Up, will hit bookstore shelves.

Jessica also writes books for the Descendants: “School of Secrets” series, based on the hit Disney Channel Original movie, Descendants!

Jessica’s books are published and translated in over twenty foreign countries. She currently splits her time between California and Colorado.

The Ravenous Readers Read ReMade: Patch Job (s02e01) + Signal to Noise - S01E02 (Review +GIVEAWAY)

When it all started we shared the ins and outs of Serial Box and Remade. Last year, we reviewed season 1. Last week, episode one premiered. We are back today to chat the first two episodes episodes!

Patch Job
by Andrea Phillips

A figure from the group’s past reappears, bringing up some serious questions about their remade lives. Is anything they thought they knew true? Can caretakers ever be good? And, most important, who can they trust?

One moment proved fateful for a group of teenagers—and not just because it’s the moment they all happened to die. At the moment of their deaths, they were snatched forward into the future and remade in a world they hardly recognize. Now, after facing murderous robots and an unpredictable environment, the teens have begun to find their footing. But can they survive long enough to figure out why they were remade? And will they ever be able to stop running?

Patch Job (s02e01) - Review

SQUEEEEE #ReMade is BACK and it wouldn’t be the dystopian sci-fi we love if it didn’t leave me with more questions than answers. Spoilers below.

So quick catch up from last season - ReMades are not all on the same page and just when you think it can’t get crazy enough…Previously dead (?) character, Jing Wei, waltzed back on the scene, leaving us all like WHAT HOW. This season opened up and showed us what she’s been up to since she died in the ReMade world and was apparently brought back? We still don’t know how but we may know why - she has the ability to fix things (robots) from the most random of parts. We also got a glimpse into her previous life through reflection.

The serialized nature of the story allows us to have these personal moments with the characters, something I enjoy as a person who enjoys a character driven story. I can already tell this season is going to be full of twists and turns. What the heck are the caretakers up to?

Signal to Noise
by Matthew Cody

Upon arriving at Sanctuary, the group is faced with two clearly malicious and dangerous caretakers. But they’ve come this far, and are determined to get inside. The only thing to do is stand and fight—whatever that may take.

It's no secret that HOLDEN is my favorite. I was thrilled that we got a Holden-centered episode so early in the season.

We've always known the intent of (some) of the ReMades was to make it to sanctuary. To get some answers. To get some peace. To make the best of this new life. So here we are, at the door to the next phase in the ReMade world. Nothing like a few caretakers to ruin that experience.

Episode two also gave us a bit more insight into Umta and the life she lead before becoming a ReMade. It's clear she's an outsider amongst the outsiders so learning a little more helps to cement her place in the team. It was great to see Cole, too. His story just makes me so sad.

I can't wait to see what happens next week! Now is the perfect time to jump in, with season 1 free on podcast and two episodes into this season.

Publisher: Serial Box
Formats: eBook & audiobook

Serial fiction startup Serial Box has been featured from coast to coast including stories on NPR, Wired, BuzzFeed and i09. Serial Box was called “a godsend for a niche market of readers” by The Chicago Tribune.

ReMade is one of Serial Box’s first attempts at YA dystopian fiction, and it’s already making splashes.

In one moment the lives of twenty-three teenagers are forever changed, and it’s not just because they all happen to die. “ReMade” in a world they barely recognize – one with robots, space elevators, and unchecked jungle – they must work together to survive. They came from different places, backgrounds, and families, and now they might be the last people on earth. Lost meets The Maze Runner in exciting serial adventure. Season 2 finds the ReMades in search of the last of humanity on a perilous journey away from what’s left of the caretakers and Arcadia.

In true Serial Box fashion of trying to cross over many mediums, season 1 of ReMade has also been turned into a podcast available for free on all major podcast platforms (and one week early on TuneIn’s First Play program). The release of the podcast is meant to coincide with season 2. The podcast will release the final episode of season 1 on the same day as episode 1 of season 2 is released on the Serial Box platforms and wherever ebooks are sold.

Team-written by some of today’s most exciting authors, ReMade season 2 is brought to you by Matthew Cody (Super), Andrea Phillips (Revision), Gwenda Bond (Girl on a Wire), E. C. Myers (The Silence of Six), and Amy Rose Capetta (Echo After Echo).

About Seral Box:

A new kind of publishing company for a new age.

While technology has rapidly evolved, the way publishers and writers bring books to readers really hasn't. Storytelling in TV has become more sophisticated and multilayered, podcasts have risen to mainstream media status—but ebooks are just books on digital devices, not easier, more fun, or more social than they were before.

Serial Box is here to change all of that: artfully blending together the best of series television and the convenience of ebooks and audiobooks to bring readers a new form of story telling. Releasing fiction serials over the course of 10-16 week seasons, Serial Box is about delivering addictive episodes straight to the user’s digital device to be read or listened to anytime, anywhere.

Taking a few pages from the world of television, Serial Box hires a team of a talented and award-winning writers to collaborate on each serial, pulling the best ideas to develop great characters and craft a narrative that captivates readers over the course of the season. A new ensemble of writers works on each series, so each will vary in genre and length, but they'll always be entertaining page-turners that keep you wondering what will happen in next week's episode.

When Friends Become Lovers: SAVING IT by Monica Murphy, Interview + GIVEAWAY!

Saving It by Monica Murphy
Publication Date:  November 6, 2017
Publisher:  Entangled Teen Crush

Eden: Josh Evans and I have been best friends forever. He knows all my secrets, and I know all of his. So when he randomly asks me to help him lose his virginity, I sort of flip out. That’s a question that sends your mind to places you’ve seriously never considered before. Like, you know. Having sex. With your best friend. Except Josh doesn’t want to have sex with me—he wants me to help him find a girl. A nice girl who’s funny and smart and cute. Except he already knows a girl just like that…

Josh: Eden Sumner is my best friend. So of course she’d be the person to help me find my perfect match, so I can drop my V card before I head off to college. Except the more we search, the more I realize that maybe the right girl has been by my side all along. I don’t need Eden’s help in finding me a girl to love. I’m pretty sure I’m already in love with Eden. But now she thinks I’m only after one thing…with anyone but her.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book is what happens when American Pie meets Friends with Benefits. It contains two best friends, plenty of angst, and lots and lots of sex talk. Reading this might have you looking at your best friend in a different light!

Tales of the Ravenous Reader – Interviews Monica Murphy

1. Saving It Has been described as American Pie meets Friends With Benefits? What inspired you to write this BFF turned lovers romance?

My Entangled editor put out a submission call a few years ago for a story like the movie American Pie. I told her, “I would love to write this,” and never did, because I was so super swamped with deadlines coming out of my ears.

Last year, she put the call out again, saying, “I really, really want this.” And I had the first chapter of Josh and Eden so I sent it to her and she was like, “I’ll take it.” And that’s how SAVING IT was born.

2.  Typically this sort of scenario happens with the female trying to lose her virginity. What made you decide on the male lead instead?

I don’t know, from the moment I considered the idea for this book, I knew the guy was the one who wanted to lose his virginity. In Josh and Eden’s case, she’s willing to wait until it feels right for her to have sex. Where Josh thinks he needs to get rid of it like it’s a burden or something.

3.  I liked how Eden and Josh took their time in figuring out their feelings for one another and I also admired how realistic the portrayal of their first time was. Since you are a romance author of adult titles what makes sex scene between young adults engaging?

I like writing adult romance, it’s how I started out my career and I especially like writing new adult romance still because I love all of those firsts, and the uneasiness and challenges of becoming an adult.

But I need to change it up or I get bored, so I love to write YA romances too! I wasn’t so focused on the actual sex scene between Josh and Eden, though I needed that to come out just right considering it was their first time together, but more the build up to the realization that hey, these two are perfect for each other. That’s what I focused on more than anything.

Writing realistic sex between teens doing it for the first time should include fumbling, awkwardness and a genuine awe of the entire moment because let’s be real—it’s a pretty big moment. And it’s not always perfect either. That’s what I was striving for.

4.  Saving It is a cute romance novel with lots of frustration but an oh so perfect ending. Sweet and addictive with the right amount of humor. You seem to know the genre quite well. Are you considering on writing more of these delightful books?

I definitely want to write more YA books! I am surrounded by my own young adults right now (my two children are teens and all of their friends) and they give me constant inspiration. You wouldn’t believe the things they tell me.

5. And on that note, what are you working on now? And what can you tell us about it?

I have a new book coming out in January. It’s a YA thriller called PRETTY DEAD GIRLS and it’s about a clique of snobby girls, a weird yet hot boy and a serial killer on the loose at a private high school. Can’t wait for people to read it!

6. I’m sure you have loads of fans, what is the best way for them to find out more about you and your books?

And I’m all over social media:

Music, Romance and Fake Girlfriends: WHEN IT'S REAL by Erin Watt Review

2017 was a year of discovery for me. A year in which I went back to listening to my heart, exploring those reads that made my heart race and realizing that romance is they key to my happy place. That being said, I discovered a plethora of authors that I had never read before and one of them was the dynamic duo of Erin Watt. I was introduced to them through their angsty mature YA series, The Royals. Holy cheese on a cracker can these authors pen a story that had me nail biting it completely throughout the entire series while making my toes curl with angsty romance and discovering a whole new crew of memorable characters that I want to see portrayed on the big screen.

So, when I read that this duo was coming out with a Rockstar-Needs-A-Fake-Girlfriend romance I was like YES! YES! YES!" The premise of this story is about a former rockstar, Oakley Ford who wants to return to the music scene but his public image needs to be revamped  and that's where a Vaughn Bennett comes to the rescue. Doesn't that just tick all the boxes in your perfect read list? I know it did for me and I consumed it in one sitting.

I must say that the premise for WHEN IT'S REAL had me salivating right from the very beginning and so I delved into this novel with reckless abandon and I was not disappointed. The circumstances for these characters being together were less than ideal but it made the story work. I never questioned the validity of it and was glad that I could follow along and enjoy the story. Oakley and Vaughn had that perfect sparring chemistry that made me laugh and  it engaged my romance radar enough to keep me waiting in breathless anticipation as to what would happen next between them. Their romance was a slow building on and yes pardon my pun, real.

Not only did I enjoy this romantic pair and their moments together I also enjoyed the supporting cast of characters and how they all gave the story it's life and unique edge. It was a great bit of book candy, the type of read that has you wholly engaged for a few hours and leave you feeling a bit happier for reading it. It's not to say that you won't be put through the emotional ringer because it wouldn't be an Erin Watt novel if they didn't make you angsty as they are known to do. Just sit back, buckle up and be ready for the romantic rollercoaster ride of the year.

Let's Talk About Sex: SEX, NOT LOVE by Vi Keeland Reveal

We are thrilled to bring you the next standalone novel from #1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Vi Keeland. SEX, NOT LOVE will release on January 15th, 2018

Model: Fabian Castro
Photographer: Rafael Catala
Cover designer: Sommer Stein, Perfect Pear Creative

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards. We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction. I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me. We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number. I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn't dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home. I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems. Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose? Nothing, I thought. It’s just sex, not love. But you know what they say about the best laid plans…   ADD TO GOODREADS
