Is Blood Thicker Than Magic?: THE ROMEO CATCHERS-Review, Interview + Giveaway!

Have you ever arrived late for a party and have so much fun that you are smacking yourself for not arriving earlier? That is exactly how I feel about Alys Arden's Casquette Girls series because it is the perfect read for my paranormal junkie heart. Recently I reviewed The Casquette Girls and now  have the pleasure of reading the follow up novel, The Romeo Catchers. It's amazing, engaging, and I need the next story now.

Much like it's predecessor, The Romeo Catchers sets it's story at a measured pace that skillfully swept me into it's pages and placed me back into it's world of witches, vampires and ghosts within the French Quarter of New Orleans and I embraced it with all my heart. The rag tag teen coven return but they are altered, shaken...and it is most apparent with Adele and Isaac. Adele suffers from the guilt of condemning her mother to be imprisoned with a clan of Vampires, while Isaac becomes increasingly unsettled by his newly acquired gift. All is not well in the vieux carre.

As the story deepens we are introduced to characters new, old, and otherwise altered and the stakes increase as Adele's need to free her mother become paramount. Yet, despite her firm resolution she will have to admit a few truths, one being that she cannot stay away from Nicco and the other the truth about her mother. An accomplishment easier said than done, but Adele is not the only one with something to hide. What happens when it all comes together

Told in dual POV between Adele and Isaac, it's the ideal balance for this story, each setting the tone that eventually had me tied up in knots. I appreciated how Alys was able to maintain the perfect balance of creep and romance throughout the story and how she found a way to introduce us to Nicco's past, well done! New and old characters come into play and trying to guess their intentions made for some very interesting conclusions. I knew that I was going to be taken for an adventure and I only wanted to read more. The ending has me looking forward for the next installment even though I feel my heart might break from it.

What's my final verdict. LOVE!!! Anyone that has read The Casquette Girls needs to read this next installment and if you haven't read this series yet, what are you waiting for? The Romeo Catchers blew me away with it's slow burn, crazy nail-biting anticipation, then the intense out-of-this-world finale. It's been weeks and I'm still buzzing about it and you will too.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Alys Arden and she was an absolute sweetheart about taking a few minutes out of her busy, busy schedule to answer a few questions before her launch for the THE ROMEO CATCHERS In New Orleans (can we say that we were very jealous because we could not attend).  We cannot express how much we LOVE these books and want you to know a bit more about this engaging series and it's amazing author.

1. THE CASQUETTE GIRLS is a must read for anyone that wishes that the worlds of Harry Potter and Buffy could somehow combine to create a kick ass story that is as enchanting as it's characters and setting. What inspired this novel and what is THE CASQUETTE GIRLS about?

Thank you! THE CASQUETTE GIRLS is about New Orleans. It’s about magic, and mayhem, and murder and myths. It’s about coping with the real and the unreal and everything in between. It’s about being a hero, or not. It’s about being sixteen. It’s about love and loss. The series takes several urban legends from the New Orleans French Quarter and weaves them together into one epic adventure. It takes place in the present day right after a hurricane has ravaged the city so it’s a bit post-apocalyptic feeling. The story weaves in and out of the past to where the legends originated, so you're swept away to Paris, Haiti, Italy (surprise, book 2!), and of course colonial New Orleans!

2. It is clear that your novels not only tell a story but they also are a love letter to The City that Care Forgot. What does New Orleans mean to you?

To me, New Orleans means people. People who believe in magic. People who believe in each other. People who get shit done when systems are failing around them. New Orleans is imagination running amuck, and not just because of carnival costumes, or sultry jazz, or open-container law, because it’s inescapably in the air we breathe.

3. New Year's resolutions, Watt Pad and a story about Vampires and more. Is this what you would have imagined for yourself when you began this writing journey and where do you see yourself as an author in the future?

Absolutely not! I feel like I’ve been on a magical rollercoaster for the last few years, roaring through the clouds. It’s all unexpected and amazing and dreamy. The future is still hard to picture as everything has been so unpredictable, but when I look into the crystal ball, I see lots and lots of pages!

4. There is so much to discuss about THE ROMEO CATCHERS, but I know we cannot spoil anything to those that have not read it yet. So, what could you say about The Romeo Catchers if you had to write it as a spell?

What a good question! Here’s a 30 sec go at it!

Spinning dreams.
Phantom screams.
Curses, covens, and bloody phleams.
The metal spikes above your head,
Keep a sharp eye or you might be dead.

5. If you had a choice which would you pick to be: A Witch, Vampire or Unicorn? and why?

SO HARD. I think my answer would change depending on the time of day/night. I’m currently prepping for the party, so I’m in full witchy-vibes mode!

6. Can you tell us what you are working on now?

I’m working on the third book in the series. I’m also working on a contemporary stand-alone, just to do something totally different. I’m working on a set of novellas that take place in the TCG world which I am hoping to put a couple out in winter!

7. What events are you attending this year? And where can readers order signed copies?

Readers can order signed copies from Octavia Books in New Orleans! My schedule is jammed this year. I have two events in New Orleans this week, and Utopia in June in Nashville. There will be many more in the fall around Halloween. :)

Thank you Alys, and we wish you much success and cannot wait for what you have in store for us next.

Is blood thicker than magic in La Nouvelle-Orléans?

Tormented by the fate she condemned her mother to, and by the lies she’s forced to tell to cover it up, Adele scours Storm-ravaged New Orleans for the truth about her family’s magical past. But every turn leads her back to the one person she's determined to forget: Niccolò Medici. Not even the multitude of enchanted locks on the attic door trapping Nicco within can break their connection.

Sensing Nicco calling to Adele, Isaac tries relentlessly to keep her from exploring paths too dark that would endanger them all. But a new threat is rising: the Medici’s presence has attracted something else to New Orleans…an older enemy, one that will bring Isaac’s haunted past to life, test the witches’ friendships, and jeopardize Adele and Isaac’s blossoming relationship.

In this spellbinding continuation of The Casquette Girls saga, Adele must draw on the past—from seventeenth-century Florence, a time bubbling with alchemy and fraternal betrayal—and sort history from fantasy if she is to have any chance of saving her mother, her coven, and her magic.
