Synopsis:

Amber Sand is not a witch. The Sand family Wicca gene somehow leapfrogged over her. But she did get one highly specific magical talent: she can see true love. As a matchmaker, Amber's pretty far down the sorcery food chain (even birthday party magicians rank higher), but after five seconds of eye contact, she can envision anyone's soul mate.

Amber works at her mother's magic shop--Windy City Magic--in downtown Chicago, and she's confident she's seen every kind of happy ending there is: except for one--her own. (The Fates are tricky jerks that way.) So when Charlie Blitzman, the mayor's son and most-desired boy in school, comes to her for help finding his father's missing girlfriend, she's distressed to find herself falling for him. Because while she can't see her own match, she can see his--and it's not Amber. How can she, an honest peddler of true love, pursue a boy she knows full well isn't her match?

The Best Kind of Magic is set in urban Chicago and will appeal to readers who long for magic in the real world. With a sharp-witted and sassy heroine, a quirky cast of mystical beings, and a heady dose of adventure, this novel will have you laughing out loud and questioning your belief in happy endings.

Tales of the Ravenous Reader INTERVIEW with Crystal Cestari

Hello Crystal and thank you for taking a few moments to answer a few questions about your book THE BEST KIND OF MAGIC.

1.  The Best Kind of Magic is an enchanting story about a girl learning to follow her heart instead of following her “fate.” What inspired this adorable read and what can you tell us about it.
This story came to me during a very interesting time in my life when I was definitely questioning fate and whether or not we all have a chosen path. Amber’s matchmaking talent is a gift she can’t control, and also gives her a very unique world view. Even when her Cupid’s arrow points her in unexpected directions, she never gives up pursuing what she feels is right. Her steadfast belief in love inspired me to take a leap of faith and see where the publishing journey would take me, and I am forever thankful!

2. If you could describe The Best Kind of Magic with 5 emoji's what would they be?
Heart, pair of eyes (looking at the heart… because Amber can see love.. get it?!), cake, sparkle stars, unicorn

3. Of Course Amber's talent doesn't come without complications. One of them being "Charlie", a boy she should not have any interest in because she knows that he is not her perfect "match".  It can be a lot to handle even if she is at the bottom of the magical totem pole, so If you could pick any talent to own which would that be and why?
I would love a spell to stop the clock, so I could spend more time doing all the things I love: writing, hanging out with my daughter, eating ice cream, etc. I’d let time run normal for all the boring things in life (grocery shopping, cleaning), and then hit pause during all the happy moments to let them play longer (dance parties! Netflix binges!). This spell would also need to extend to my loved ones though, so I wouldn’t just be frozen in time by myself!

4.  The setting for The Best Kind of Magic is at the Navy Pier in downtown Chicago, which is so perfect for this book. Was that location always as you had intended or do did you ever have another place in mind and why?
From the beginning, I wanted this story to take place in the real world, in an area so busy that people may not recognize the magic around them. Chicago is a place I know and love, and Navy Pier, with it’s bustling tourist crowds, seemed like a perfect place to hide magic in plain sight. Even though Windy City Magic sells legit magic, it somehow flies under the radar, since everyone is always running off to the next attraction. Being right on the lake, the pier can take on a very magical quality at night lit up against the skyline. I felt it would be a good backdrop for romance!

5. The relationship between Amber and her bestie pre-cog, Amani is so much fun and I adore how they have made a pledge not to tell each other what they see. If you had this talent, would you tell your BFF who her "match" made in heaven was?
I feel like I would explode if I had to keep a secret that big from my best friend. I tell her everything! Of course, if she really wanted me to keep it under wraps, I would, because she’s the best and I’d do anything for her.

6. What are you working on now? and can you tell us about it?
I am really excited about my current work in progress, but I can’t share any details yet! I’ve been immersing myself in a very specific corner of pop culture to really set the tone. I will say this new idea also features hints of magic, and two very different love stories.

7. Quick Fire questions--
What HP house do you belong in? – Hufflepuff 4eva
Wands or Nose Wrinkles? – Wands are the coolest. With the nose twitching, I’d be afraid to sneeze and mess things up!
Black Cat or White Owl? – White Owl
Favorite halloween movie? – Nightmare Before Christmas (I know there is debate as to which holiday that movie belongs to, but we always watch it while decorating the house for Halloween: my favorite holiday!)
Unicorns or Zombie's? – UNICORNS!!!!

Thank you for answering these questions. I hope you have fun with them.
Thank you, Nancy! These questions were great! Thank you so much for reading The Best Kind of Magic and supporting my story! Xoxo, Crystal

  2. I loved your interview Q's!!! Especially that emoji one-- too cute! I also really liked Crystal's answer to what kind of magical power she would like to have. Slowing time down during the good times would make like a lot more fun-- I think I'd also like to be able to speed time up during work or things that aren't so fun-- like yard work, sitting in traffic, driving long distance, childbirth labor!! haha!!

Thanks so much for being part of the tour Nancy!
