We Were Liars - Still as Amazing Today - Interview +GIVEAWAY

Maybe you've been hiding under a rock the last few years, an amazing book titled We Were Liars dropped and we haven't been the same. Not to worry...A deluxe version is headed our way! Check out an interview with E. Lockhart and pick up the newly updated We Were Liars, out May 23rd!

Interview with E. Lockhart

It's been three years since We Were Liars debuted. In that time, how has your relationship with the book and its audience changed and/or grown?

I have been going around the country speaking at festivals, libraries and schools since the book came out. I love everybody. Also, I am super tired. People write mottos on their hands. People give me poems and show me art they’ve made. People are angry with me, sometimes. It is a very moving experience to have written a book that brings out passionate responses in readers.

The side characters play an important role in the development of the story. In fact, the story itself is heavily character driven. What kind of planning went into crafting the story with this kind of cast?

I started with the archetype: a kingdom, a monarch, and three beautiful daughters, like princesses in a fairy tale. I put that set-up onto a privately owned island in 2014 and thought about the teenagers who would be the children of those princess-like sisters. Then I thought about the family conflict that surfaces in so many of those types of stories.

All the characters are sympathetic to me. Even the antagonists. I tried to understand where they were coming from and to write from the parts of myself they represent. Penny, for example, is mourning the end of her marriage and the death of her mother. She suffers under her father’s disdain. Then she makes some bad decisions and drinks way too much pinot grigio. I am not unfamiliar with how those things feel.

Was the ending always the driver of the story or did it come later? How did We Were Liars conceptualize for you?

I carried the idea of a story set on a private island around with me for almost a year. Then I figured out the plot in a single, hour-long brainstorming session. I began to write, then, knowing the ending. The entire book is shaped by the truth of what happened.

What books would you recommend for fans of We Were Liars?

If you like a twist of meaning, I recommend Fight Club by Chuck Palahnuik. Intense romance? Every Day by David Levithan. If you like books inspired by fairy tales that are not in fact fairy tales, then Helen Oyeyemi’s Boy, Snow, Bird is a fascinating one.

You have a new story coming later this fall! What would you tell fans of We Were Liars to expect?

It has a twisty plot structure with lots of surprises, like We Were Liars. Also lots of beaches. But more blood. More fake accents. More slot machines. It’s about two girls who look enough alike to share a passport. Genuine Fraud is in stores Sept 5, 2017.
