by Cath Crowley

Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favorite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now Rachel has returned to the city—and to the bookshop—to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side—surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages—they find hope in each other. Because life may be uncontrollable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.

My Thoughts:

Oh my WORDS IN DEEP BLUE, how do I love thee.  Never did I realize that this was the novel that my bibliophilic heart longed for. One that would illicit dreams spent amongst the many stacks of books.

Cath Crowley has written a beautiful story about love letters, a bookstore, and the relationships that combine them both. Told in dual POV between the two main characters - Rachel and Henry, who are both trying to manage their own heartbreaks.  Henry is a bit obtuse but affably so and although you understand where he was coming from, it still made you want to give him a bit of a shake and Rachel's voice is real and raw, some moments almost too painful to witness as she is trying to process a grief almost too painful to bear.

“There should be a disconnect button you can push when someone leaves: you’ve fucked me over; therefore I no longer love you. I’m not asking for the button to be connected to an ejector seat that removes them from the universe, just one small button that removes them from your heart.” heart, The beautiful prose is what I enjoyed most. The literary references and the passion that these characters feel for them is all so engaging. I was absolutely enamored with the story and was willing to go anywhere Cath Crowley took me.

WORDS IN DEEP BLUE is much more than just Rachel and Henry’s adventures. It's also a story that embraces the  secondary cast just as much as it's main characters and for whom I found just as endearing.   The Family's  and friendship's that I witnessed in this story was amazing to watch unfold and it the only complaint I have is that I didn't want it to end.

This book I highly recommend to all lovers of words, books and the places that they take us.
