How to Rob a US Mint - Interview with Elisa Ludwig (Coin Heist)

Alright, we know you all love a good heist and we have double the dose of a heist today! Coin Heist, the novel by Elisa Ludwig, is officially a Netflix original movie AND the book got a new cover to match. We got an interview with Elisa to talk about her book becoming a movie!

We had the chance to read and watch the movie and can share the movie is very true to the book. The casting matches the characterizations (and includes fan favorite - Sasha Pieterse aka Alison from Pretty Little Liars) and the story progresses the same. So check out both if you enjoy one or the other!

Interview with Elisa Ludwig  - Coin Heist

The heist involves the US Mint. What research did you do to get the setting right?

I read pretty widely about mints, the kinds of coins they produce, the production process and the history of error coins. I also visited the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia a few times to see what the characters would see on a tour and to study the layout of the production area for the heist scenes.

Each of the characters has their own personality and unique strength to support the heist. If you were asked to be part of a heist, what would you contribute to the team?

I would be the extremely punctual thief who keeps everyone on schedule. That is my superpower, as a working mom who does a million things at once.

Coin Heist is in good company with other heist movies and books. What ones are your favorites?

As far as movies go, I love Rafifi, A Fish Called Wanda, Three Kings and the Ocean's 11 remake. To be honest, I don't tend to read many heist books.

Were there scenes that you cut from the final draft?

There were no scenes cut from the final draft as I recall, but there was definitely some thought about a potential sequel. So far that has not come to pass, but I'd love to see what happens next for these characters.

Having your book made into a Netflix movie is really exciting! How did you react when you found out?

I was extremely excited and probably did not actually believe it was happening until the day I went on set and got to meet Jay and Alexis. They were filming the big heist scene so that made it even more thrilling and surreal and amazing, as I watched my ideas come to life around me.

The last place you'd expect to find a team of criminals is at a prestigious Philadelphia prep school. But on a class trip to the U.S. Mint - which prints a million new coins every 30 minutes - an overlooked security flaw becomes far too tempting for a small group of students to ignore.

United by dire circumstances, these unlikely allies - the nerd, the slacker, the athlete, and the perfect student - band together to attempt the impossible: rob the U.S. Mint. This diverse crew is forced to confront their true beliefs about each other and themselves as they do the wrong thing for the right reasons.

Elisa Ludwig's COIN HEIST is a fun, suspenseful and compelling thriller, told from the revolving perspectives of four teens, each with their own motive for committing a crime that will change all of their lives - if they can pull it off.
