Hello Mariko and thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions for us at Tales of the Ravenous Reader. It is an honor to have you here with us and we cannot wait to share your story.

It is my great honor to be here!

1. Since the day you were born, you were sheltered and groomed to marry and elevate your family's social standing. What did that training consist of?

Unending tedium. I would often spend entire days in the company of no one but my nursemaid. Mornings were spent learning calligraphy. Afternoons were spent on mastering decorum. I learned early on how best to apply burned paulownia wood onto my eyebrows to enhance them, and the art of serving tea was a prized skill amongst most of the young girls I knew. Luckily I was able to conceal from prying eyes that I loved creating inventions—especially if it meant getting to eavesdrop on my twin brother Kenshin’s lessons.

2. Many may not know that you are a very intelligent person who has invented some pretty amazing things. Can you share one of those inventions with us?

One of my most prized inventions before I was overtaken in the forest was a small lantern I could fold and conceal in the sleeve of my kimono.

3. Bravery does not come naturally to you, but at a certain point you are forced to take action and make a life-changing decision. What motivated you to take this path?

Before the events in Jukai forest, I never understood what it meant to have my life on the line. In moments like these, I’ve found that indecision is not the wisest course of action. Unless you are brave, you run the risk of dying.

4. What can you tell us about the Black Clan? And how it has changed your outlook about your family?

The Black Clan is full of mystery and contradiction. I still sometimes feel as though I have only scratched the surface of who they are. Learning about the lives of those who are less fortunate than I has raised some troubling questions about my upbringing.

5. Okami is the leader of the Black Clan and he has taken you under his wing and has teaching you how to fight. What else have you learned from him? And do you find him attractive?

I’ve learned that fear is a weapon other people use to control you. And that the only control anyone has over you is the control you give that person. I have also learned what it means to face who you truly are.

Attraction is immaterial, as it cannot save me from the dangers I now face.

6.How do you feel about your character growth throughout this journey of yours? And what you are most proud of?

I am not certain about my growth. I do know that an entire world has been opened to me. It is a world filled with darkness and secrets. Lies buried beneath truth. I know I have a lot to learn. I am most proud of realizing that my core is built around justice.

7. What bit of knowledge can you bestow to our readers?

Do not light a fire beside the sap of a certain purple flower.

Thank you so very much for this interview Mariko. It was a pleasure to have you with us and please send Okami our regards :)

Thank you!

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor's favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family's standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she's quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she's ever known.
