A Dog's Purpose - Interview with W. Bruce Cameron + GIVEAWAY

Everyone can agree that dogs are something special. Like, really special. Even though they occasionally drive us crazy, they're the most loving and loyal creatures. I don't know about you all, but I can't even be mad at my pups for more than a few minutes without feeling bad. How do they do that?

We had a chance to chat all things dog with W. Bruce Cameron, the author of A Dog's Purpose. If you didn't know, A Dog's Purpose started as a story to help Bruce's future wife get through a tough time after losing her furry bff. The pain of losing a dog is never easy, but coupled with this being her first loss, she lamented that she would never again have a dog. “That was bad news for me! I thought she would fit into my future plans but not if we couldn't have a dog," Bruce shared,  "I had this idea - it came like I was downloading a movie. It came from start to finish. Never had anything happen before or since. It was a miracle." It was then that she told Bruce he had to turn this story into a book. A coastal drive one afternoon turned into the story of how dog's never truly leave us.

In the time since telling that story, Bruce has reflected on his favorite reactions to the story. He shared that it's gratifying to help those who have lost a dog find peace. Bruce read Old Yeller as a boy, and in the end there’s a terrible tragedy. This was a traumatizing experience that stuck with Bruce. He set out to write the antidote to Old Yeller - the story of a dog who doesn’t die. I think we can all agree that A Dog's Purpose has a much better outcome.

Since Bruce can't walk a mile in in a dog's shoes, he spent a lot of time observing dogs at the dog park. "It didn't help to walk around the house carrying a tennis ball or to dig up the neighbor’s yard," Bruce chuckled. Even though he read many books about dog behavior, he quickly learned that dogs have their own social interactions and structures which he likened to middle school. "It's constantly changing. People who bring their dogs to the park and chat instead of watching them are missing the show," Bruce recalled.

Appreciate the role dogs play in our lives.

With his dog Tucker barking in the background, Bruce drove home that true love never dies and our real friends are always there for us if we know where to look. "Let a dog into your heart. It’s the best thing you can do for your soul," Bruce said with a lit that we could only imagine was a smile through the phone.

Bruce & Tucker

Indeed, I lost Ambrose, who was my best friend for over 8 years, and I see parts of him in my other three pups. He's gone but definitely not forgotten. I miss him every day.

Up next for Bruce is A Dog’s Way Home, out May 9th. A Dog's Way Home is about Bella, a pitbull who is picked up in Denver (where pit bulls are banned), and her journey home.
