THE CHOSEN by J.R. Ward Book Review: A Battle For Love

Before I started this blog and long before I began reading YA novels, I was a hard core adult romance/paranormal reader. I read everything that had shape shifters, faeries, name it and I would read it. But one author in particular with one set of hard-core vampires that wore shit kickers and treated their shellans like queens would always be my favorite series, favorite books always.... J.R. WARD and her BDB (Black Dagger Brotherhood). It all began with Dark Lover and 15 books later we are with THE CHOSEN and it doesn't look like it is going to stop (no, never ever). As with any series there are highs and lows, ups and downs but this book....Oh this book has got the goods and it has been well worth the wait my friends.

My Thoughts

I came into this book not sure of what to expect. Since I was on a high from reading THE BEAST last year and truly had my heart set on reading about Assail and Sola, whom I thought would be next couple in this series. But then Xcor and Layla were announced to be the center of the next story and I sighed and never paid any more attention until THE CHOSEN reached my hands.

Once I started reading THE CHOSEN I was hooked for it felt like the first few novels that made me a BDB cellie for life. It brought all the feels and made me reminiscent of the days when I started reading for pleasure. Although I initially was not too invested in the Xcor and Layla storyline I was quickly reminded how J.R. Ward can come in and magically pull at all my emotions and she made me a hard core Xcor fan. His plight was almost as heartbreaking as Zsadist's for he had been mistreated by those that should have loved him and trained by a sadistic bastard   that led him on his course in life and to his Band of Bastards. His love for Layla was so beautiful and selfless as he proved to be a man of worth, and it totally redeemed him in my eyes.  Layla on the other hand had seemed like such a meek creature, trained to only please the brotherhood until a confession turned her otherwise perfect world upside down and onto a path that I never saw coming....and OMG! it was good.

Although Xcor and Layla's love story is paramount in this book a lot of stuff is going on on the sidelines that will complicate things for the BDB so be mindful and not too surprised by what you encounter, okay maybe a little surprised. LOL! A new evil has come to play and it will be interesting to see how it is going to affect the Brotherhood down the road.

What I enjoyed most besides the satisfying love story is the way the theme of forgiveness seems to encompass this novel. It takes a big person to admit their faults but it takes a bigger person to forgive another's faults and to move on. The brotherhood proved how much they meant to one another and how they truly have their backs when needed.

If you are a fan of this series then you are in good company my dears. THE CHOSEN is precious cargo and I bow down to the WARDen and all her wondrous talents. If you haven't read her books then I highly encourage you to do so and if you have stopped for whatever reason then please read this one...I promise it will make you so very happy.

Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.
As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.
