Living in Two Different Worlds - Guest Post with Chris Cannon, Author of the Going Down in Flames Series

Switching Between Fantasy and Contemporary

I love writing fantasy because I can create the world and do whatever I want as long as it keeps true to the rules of the universe that I’ve set forth. I had so much fun creating the different dragon Clans for Going Down In Flames and giving them different characteristics. Blues breathe ice and are the fastest fliers. Reds are the strongest and the middle class worker bees. Greens breathe wind and are the smartest dragons. Blacks breathe lightning and are the most creative. Orange dragons breathe sonic waves and are more connected to the earth.

Plus I’ve always fantasized about blasting certain annoying people, but I’m not a large person, so the ability to breath fire would really help in those situations. Not that I’d actually do it, but it’s fun to fantasize about.

When I write romantic comedies/contemporary romance I have to stick to real world rules. There are so many ways that relationships can go wrong in the real world before finally going right that it’s fun to create those scenarios. Like what happens if a girl kisses the guy her brother hates most in the world just to spite him, which is the idea that sparked The Boyfriend Bet.

Romance lends itself to comedy because people do ridiculous, embarrassing things when they are in love. Everyone can relate to the act of putting themselves out there and there is no guarantee that it will all work out.

Switching back and forth between these two genres lets my mind play in different ways. If my dragons aren’t talking to me, I can always switch over to human characters and their issues. Writing in two genres helps to avoid writer’s block because being focused on one thing and believing I can’t stray from that project is stressful. The only real problem I have is that Going Down In Flames is written in third person, but the Boyfriend Chronicles are written in first. There have been several occasions where I’ve finished writing a chapter only to realize it’s in third person when it should be in first person, or vice versa. Then I tend to utter some not-so-nice words before going back to fix it. Other than that, I really enjoy writing in two different worlds.

Bryn McKenna has it all. Even though she’s a hybrid dragon, she’s finally fitting in the new shape-shifting dragon world that’s become her own. But her grandparent’s want to ruin everything by making Bryn’s nightmare of an arranged marriage to Jaxon Westgate a reality. It doesn’t help that Jaxon’s father is on a witch hunt for Rebel sympathizers and Bryn finds herself in his line of fire.

If she doesn’t say “I do,” she’ll lose everything. Good-bye flying. Good-bye best friends. Good-bye magic. But if she bends to her grandparents’ will and agrees to marry Jaxon she’ll lose the love of her life—her knight.

Award winning author Chris Cannon lives in Southern Illinois with her husband and her three dogs, Pete the shih tzu who sleeps on her desk while she writes, Molly the ever-shedding yellow lab, and Tyson the sandwich-stealing German Shepherd Beagle. She believes coffee is the Elixir of Life. Most evenings after work, you can find her sucking down caffeine and writing fire-breathing paranormal adventures and snarky contemporary romance.
