TOP TEN audiobooks of 2016

I’ve listened to a lot audiobooks so far this year. Many of them were quite memorable, but I wanted to share the #TOPTENOF2016 audiobooks that really captivated me as a listener.

So here’s my list of some of my favorite audiobooks for 2016, and in no particular order:

GEMINA is the best audio book I have listened to this year. A full cast audio masterpiece full of sound effects that is pure listening magic, showcasing a story that will leave you breathless.

  • Narrated by: Carla Corvo , Steve West , full cast , P.J. Ochlan
  • Length: 12 hrs and 34 mins
  • Unabridged Audiobook

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna's social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.
The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout best seller Illuminae continues onboard the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.
Hanna is the station captain's pampered daughter, Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy's most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.
When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station's wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren't just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia - and possibly the known universe - is in their hands.
But relax. They've totally got this. They hope.
Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling listeners into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

I had the honor of seeing Anna Kendrick in person for her book event and found her to be such a pleasure to see. She was spirited, witty and totally refreshing and her narrating her own story is just as entertaining.

    Scrappy Little Nobody

  • Written by: Anna Kendrick
  • Narrated by: Anna Kendrick
  • Length: 6 hrs
  • Unabridged Audiobook
  • Release Date:11-15-16
  • Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
A collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award-nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect."I'm excited to publish my first book, and because I get uncomfortable when people have high expectations, I'd like to use this opportunity to showcase my ineptitude and pettiness and the frequency with which I embarrass myself. And while many of my female inspirations who have become authors are incredibly well educated and accomplished comedy writers, I'm very, very funny on Twitter, according to BuzzFeed and my mom, so I feel like this is a great idea. Quick question: Are run-on sentences still frowned upon? Wait, is ending a sentence with a preposition still frowned upon? I mean, upon frowned? Dammit!" (Anna Kendrick)Anna Kendrick's autobiographical collection of essays amusingly recounts memorable moments throughout her life, from her middle-class upbringing in New England to the blockbuster movies that have made her one of Hollywood's most popular actresses today. Expanding upon the witty and ironic dispatches for which she is known, Anna Kendrick's essays offer her one-of-a-kind commentary on the absurdities she's experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture.

The Diabolic is wicked fun. Entertaining to the last word and it will definitely keep you on your toes. A great audio book that is a must listen for it's storyline and narration.

The Diabolic

Red Queen meets The Hunger Games in this epic novel about what happens when the galaxy's most deadly weapon masquerades as a senator's daughter and a hostage of the galactic court.
A Diabolic is ruthless. A Diabolic is powerful. A Diabolic has a single task: kill in order to protect the person you've been created for.
Nemesis is a Diabolic, a humanoid teenager created to protect a galactic senator's daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up side by side but are in no way sisters. Nemesis is expected to give her life for Sidonia, and she would do so gladly. She would also take as many lives as necessary to keep Sidonia safe.
When the power-mad emperor learns Sidonia's father is participating in a rebellion, he summons Sidonia to the Galactic court. She is to serve as a hostage. Now there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia. She must become her. Nemesis travels to the court disguised as Sidonia - a killing machine masquerading in a world of corrupt politicians and two-faced senators' children. It's a nest of vipers with threats on every side, but Nemesis must keep her true abilities a secret or risk everything.
As the empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns there is something more to her than just deadly force. She finds a humanity truer than what she encounters from most humans. Amid all the danger, action, and intrigue, her humanity just might be the thing that saves her life - and the empire.

One of the cutest romances I have listened to this year. I love the dual narration and the accents that made this audiobook such a joy to listen to.

A Totally Awkward Love Story

The summer before college, Hannah swears she's finally going to find The One. And for five perfect minutes, Hannah does find him. He's cute and makes her laugh like crazy. She just wishes she'd caught his name, because Toilet Boy Cinderella really lacks sex appeal.
For Sam, the summer is off to a bad start for a million reasons. But for five minutes his luck changes: In a fancy restroom painted purple like it belongs in a Bond villain hideaway, Sam falls head over heels for some strange and hilarious girl. Of course he doesn't know her name. With his luck he'll never see her again, and he'll remain a girlfriendless, moony-eyed virgin. Forever.
But another chance meeting brings them together - only to have a chance misunderstanding drive them apart...and then the cycle starts all over again. Madcap mishaps, raunchy hilarity, and deep romance follow these two wherever they go. For two people so clearly destined for each other, they sure have a hell of a lot of trouble even getting together.

Oh My!!! I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this audio book. The dual narration was perfect and the storyline was one of my absolute favorites for this year.

 738 Days: A Novel

At 15 Amanda Grace was abducted on her way home from school. Seven hundred and thirty-eight days later, she escaped. Her 20/20 interview is what everyone remembers - Amanda describing the room where she was kept, the torn poster of TV heartthrob Chase Henry on the wall. It reminded her of home and gave her the strength to keep fighting.
Now, years later, Amanda is struggling to live normally. Her friends have gone on to college while she battles PTSD. She's not getting any better, and she fears that if something doesn't change soon she never will.
Six years ago Chase Henry defied astronomical odds, won a coveted role on a new TV show, and was elevated to superstardom. With it came drugs, alcohol, arrests, and crazy spending sprees. Now he's sober and a Hollywood pariah, washed up at 24.
To revamp his image, Chase's publicist comes up with a plan: surprise Amanda Grace with the chance to meet her hero, followed by a visit to the set of Chase's new movie. The meeting is a disaster, but out of mutual desperation Amanda and Chase strike a deal. What starts as a simple arrangement, though, rapidly becomes more complicated when they realize they need each other in more ways than one. But when the past resurfaces in a new threat, will they stand together or fall apart?
With charm and heart, Stacey Kade takes listeners on a journey of redemption and love.

I don't think I have ever ugly cried as much as I did with this book. I was in the car sobbing the entire time. I loved the dual narration and the story will turn you into a mess. You have been warned.

A Thousand Boy Kisses: A Novel
One kiss lasts a moment. But a thousand kisses can last a lifetime.
One boy. One girl. A bond that is forged in an instant and cherished for a decade. A bond that neither time nor distance can break. A bond that will last forever. Or so they believe.
When 17-year-old Rune Kristiansen returns from his native Norway to the sleepy town of Blossom Grove, Georgia, where he befriended Poppy Litchfield as a child, he has just one thing on his mind: Why had the girl who was one half of his soul, who promised to wait faithfully for his return, cut him off without a word of explanation?
Rune's heart was broken two years ago when Poppy fell silent. When he discovers the truth, he finds that the greatest heartache is yet to come.
A standalone young adult tearjerker romance, recommended for ages 14 and up.

One of my favorite books of the year brilliantly narrated. This audiobook had me from the start and I could not get enough of this story. Bravo!

The Serpent King

Dill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life - at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes; and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father's extreme faith and very public fall from grace.
He and his fellow outcast friends must try to make it through their senior year of high school without letting the small-town culture destroy their creative spirits and senses of self. Graduation will lead to new beginnings for Lydia, whose edgy fashion blog is her ticket out of their rural Tennessee town. And Travis is content where he is thanks to his obsession with an epic book series and the fangirl turning his reality into real-life fantasy.
Their diverging paths could mean the end of their friendship. But not before Dill confronts his dark legacy to attempt to find a way into the light of a future worth living.

A Gathering of Shadows: A Novel

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London.
In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games - an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries - a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.
But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again-and so to keep magic's balance, another London must fall.

One of my all time favorite authors proved how amazing she is with THE BEAST. This story had everything I could ask for in a book and it was well narrated by Jim Frangione.

The Beast: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood

There's strong magnetic pull around the Black Dagger Brotherhood audio series. The sun in the center of this sonic solar system? The powerful vampire warriors. Their story is as compelling as gravity itself. The Beast adds a 14th gorgeous planet to their paranormal audio universe. And this one is sure to stand out loudly in the night sky.
After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted, and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself....
For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side, and his king and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can't understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him...and that terrifies him as well as distances him from his mate.
After suffering a mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world...and Mary's. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from....
The voice of the Brotherhood is Jim Frangione. His less-is-more approach and deep vocal undertones draw you in, and hold you deep inside the story.

This full cast audio book of Crooked Kingdoms did not disappoint. Full of mounting suspense and moments of sheer heartbreak. A must listen!
