Emberlings Gathered to Celebrate A Torch Against the Night: Event Recap

#ATATN | August 30th, 2016

Sabaa Tahir launched A Torch Against the Night in conversation with Stephanie Garber last week and it was stellar!

Stephanie opened up the conversation with a question about the chapters from Helene's perspective. "I love Helene and I've always wanted her to have a voice but I wasn't sure when it was going to happen. It look a while because she had to be different but just similar enough to Elias, considering their similar background." Sabaa shared.

Sabaa planned most the elements of A Torch Against the Night, yet she didn't expect what would happen for Elias. In fact, she had been planning this book for eight years! "You have readers now, and they have their own expectations. You feel really nervous about how they are going to react," Sabaa confided in the crowd, "And then you have your own expectations and your character expectations. You want to do justice to the story in your head but there are time constraints." Both books were inspired by current events, including stories of Serbian refugees.

Stephanie pointed out Sabaa's love of the villains in her books (and others). "We may not want to admit it but they're not the other...They're us. We can all see pieces of ourselves in them." Sabaa takes a scenario and multiplies it by ten to create the evil things the villains in her books do. Her favorite villains include Voldemort, Darth Vader, Umbridge, Maven from Red Queen, and Cersei Lannister.
Those of you waiting for Ember movie news, Sabaa shared that the script is almost complete and she had the opportunity to discuss the world building in depth. "This was a pleasant surprise!" Sabaa gleamed, as she had heard that authors get little say in their movie counterparts.

Sabaa shared that she has been well embraced by the YA community, from authors to bloggers. She has enjoyed meeting readers, hearing their theories, and seeing their fan art. "I love getting book recommendations from readers." Sabaa revealed. She's also excited to meet readers who know the series and have questions about the series. Fans going to upcoming tour dates, be sure to prep your questions and book recs!

As always, if you can't make it out to a tour date, Kepler's has signed copies of both books.
