Publication Date: April 5, 2016

Publisher: Month9Books

Patient Twenty-nine.

A monster roams the halls of Soothing Hills Asylum. Three girls dead. 29 is endowed with the curse…or gift of perception. She hears messages in music, sees lyrics in paintings. And the corn. A lifetime asylum resident, the orchestral corn music is the only constant in her life.

Mason, a new, kind orderly, sees 29 as a woman, not a lunatic. And as his belief in her grows, so does her self- confidence. That perhaps she might escape, might see the outside world.

But the monster has other plans. The missing girls share one common thread...each was twenty-nine's cell mate.

Will she be next?

Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Brynn Chapman is the daughter of two teachers. Her writing reflects her passions: science, history and love—not necessarily in that order. In real life, the geek gene runs strong in her family, as does the Asperger’s syndrome. Her writing reflects her experience as a pediatric therapist and her interactions with society’s downtrodden. In fiction, she’s a strong believer in underdogs and happily-ever-afters. She also writes non-fiction and lectures on the subjects of autism and sensory integration and is a medical contributor to online journal The Age of Autism.

She also writes under the pseudonym R.R. Smythe .

World Building-What Say You?

To build the world of Requiem Red in my mind's eye, I toured a historical asylum twice. Once as a photo tour and the other as a historical.

It was far too easy to build Jane's world in my head. The frigid conditions. The horror of being abandoned and left in the institution as a child.

The maniacal Dr. Frost and his 'playground' of twirling beds and chairs, leeches, dunk tanks and more.

The utter soullessness of being known as a number and not a name. Of having humans look through you, not at you. Speaking to you as if you are a child, despite being an adult.

The perpetual feeling you are less.

Never having seen anything outside the walls and grounds.

The difficulty of getting discharged—of proving you are sound of mind—of earning your way to the elusive WARD ONE, where patients are prepared for discharge—to find jobs, and homes, and are tested for mental stability.

Jane's thrill of finding the abandoned library in the catacombs—where her mind could escape to places she would never see, foods she would never taste and love...she would never know.

To world build—I read books from the period, journals, medical books, first hand accounts if possible. I found a journal from an orderly from the 1800's which proved sad, useful and fascinating all at once.

Good writers, I believe, are just quiet actors. Able to imagine themselves in situations, and slip into other people's skin—but then spit that all out of their fingers onto the page
