An Ember In The Ashes Book Launch, Interview with Sabaa Tahir + GIVEAWAY

As I have always stated I am a most fortunate YA book lover because I have a plethora of bookstores that host the most amazing authors and events ever. On April 28th Kepler's bookstore hosted the book launch for Sabaa Tahir and her debut novel (which is incredible) AN EMBER IN THE ASHES.  I had the honor of being asked to interview Sabaa on behalf of @penguinteen and to say I was overwhelmed was an understatement. I had the privilege of reading AEITA last year and instantly fell in love with her novel and became an instant fangirl. So, it was with much joy that I was able to attend an event for a local author that has such an awesome book. I'm sharing my photos from the event with you and then you can get to know Sabaa a little better from the interview attached and don't forget to enter my contest to win a signed copy of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES.

The cutest cupcakes were there for all to pick up when they got their book signed by Sabaa, and they were yummy too!
There was a lot of support for Sabaa from family, friends, readers, bloggers and fellow authors like the fabulous Renee Ahdieh who wrote The Wrath and The Dawn (LOVED! her book)
Everyone got treated to the book video trailer for An Ember in the Ashes and it was beautiful.
It was a packed house

As you can see it was a great night filled with much love for a fabulous author and her amazing debut novel. I wish I could have taken a picture of the wonderful food that Sabaa had brought in for us. I could have sworn that I did but alas could not find any on my phone. I guess I was too busy stuffing my face with dolmas, hummus, falafel, naan, olives, tandori chicken, kefta kabab and cookies to get any pictures taken. Next time...

Now onto my interview with Sabaa.

What was the "spark" that inspired the premise of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES.

Ember was inspired both by my childhood growing up in the Mojave desert, and by the foreign stories I read as an editor at The Washington Post.

I know that you're very passionate about music and since today is your book launch day what soundtrack would you compile to represent this momentous occasion.

Probably my EMBER soundtrack, which is 200 songs long, and which I will be putting up SOON. A sample EMBER playlist is available on the Cuddlebuggery book blog.

Is there a message in your novel that you want your readers to grasp?

That hope is a powerful force, one that is stronger than both hate and fear.

Just as your novel will inspire future authors, what authors have inspired you to write?

So many! J.K. Rowling, Terry Brooks, Marilyn Robinson, Toni Morrison, Marion Zimmer Bradley, to name a few.

AN EMBER IN THE ASHES has moments of brutality that can be quite startling, yet it never seems forced or out of place. What do you think about that?

Thank you. I tried to reflect the truths of our broader world. I don't think people always realizing how truly horrible humans can be. Both historically and in modern times, humans have treated each other abominably. I wanted to channel that harsh truth into EMBER.

The main characters in your novel are quite memorable, which of them do you relate to the most and why?

I think I relate most to Elias because like me as a kid, he too feels like an outcast. He feels as if he doesn’t belong, and learning that he should be proud of that is part of his journey, just like it was part of mine.

Now that your book is finally out in stores and the film rights have been sold what do you think will be the biggest challenge ahead?

Making time to write!

So, when is the sequel coming out? You have left me WANTING, WANTING, WANTING another novel and by poor heart cannot take the suspense. Please put me out of my misery. PLEASE!! Lol

I really hope I can put you out of your misery soon!

Thank you, Sabaa for the interview and Penguin Random House for contacting me and asking me for this great honor. It was a pleasure.
