Winning what you want may cost you everything you love

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

My Thoughts:

When I picked up THE WINNER'S CURSE by Marie Rutkoski I did not know what to expect.  Maybe a few hours of distraction, a bit of adventure and some romance. You know, the typical fantasy read, but I was so very wrong for little did I realize that I would be swept up into this world that Marie created and that I did not want to leave it.

THE WINNER'S CURSE begins at an unhurried pace, allowing the reader to become acquainted with the world and it's mesmerizing main characters: Kestrel and Arin. Kestrel is the daughter of a general who longs to escape the life that she is expected to lead and Arin is the slave that she purchases in a moment of foolishness. Each have hidden agendas and secrets that make for a very interesting story. Yet, it is the mystery that surrounds Arin that makes one stay riveted to every page.  That, and the chemistry between that seems to scorch the very pages that they live within.

While Kestrel and Arin command this story, the supporting cast in THE WINNER'S CURSE will also captive and demand your in equal measure. You will be hard pressed to not become attached to certain characters while despising others.

As I became immersed in this new and exciting world I was ferocious in my quest to know how Kestrel and Arin would progress forward especially when the tables are turned in their relationship. It is at this point that I realized that I had a mad crush for Arin. My heart would just go crazy when secrets were revealed and emotions were raw. I could clearly understand each characters plight and the reasons for their actions but my heart would ache for the impossible.

Lovers of Fantasy will fall head over heels for THE WINNER'S CURSE by Marie Rutkoski because it is beautifully written while showcasing a world that is brutal and harsh while at it's heart is a pair of lovers that you will not soon forget. Great for teens and adults alike but be forewarned you will not want to put it down
