DEFY BLOG TOUR: INTERVIEW and GIVEAWAY with SARA B. LARSON

Hello and thank you for stopping by the DEFY BLOG TOUR that is presented by ROCKSTAR BOOK TOURS. Today as member of this tour I will be interviewing SARA B. LARSON, author of DEFY, and she will share a few interesting tid bits with us.

So, please sit back and relax and spend a few minutes reading about this debut author and her upcoming knock your socks off, amazing novel DEFY.

1) DEFY is a standout book that was impossible to put down and I would love to know (as well as many other fans) where the inception for this novel came from. DEFY came from a very difficult period in my life, when I lost someone I loved. I was so upset by his death that I couldn’t write anything, but a friend of mine told me to stop trying to write a book and just write what I was feeling. So that’s exactly what I did. I sat down and wrote a scene, not intending for it to go anywhere…but then I got curious about the characters. This whole fascinating world unraveled itself and I realized Alexa had a very intriguing, difficult, but ultimately amazing story that needed to be told. I threw myself into that writing and from there the story took on its own life. It became a story of survival and moving forward, a story of what true courage and strength is, and a story about the many different kinds of love, and hope (even in the most desperate of situations) and risking everything for the chance of a better future.

2) As you progress in the series do you find the writing process easier or more difficult? and why? I think it’s some of both, honestly. As the series progresses, I know the characters and the world better and better, so it’s easier in some ways. But it’s also harder because the stakes keep getting higher and higher, and I want each book to be better than the last. It’s also interesting taking all the threads you’ve been weaving through tens of thousands of words and finally creating the final tapestry you’d intended from the beginning. I like to say that in DEFY, you see a fairly limited view of the world Alexa lives in because it’s all from her point of view and she’s hasn’t seen or been taught much beyond what she’s had to just to survive. But with the sequel her view of the world and her knowledge of what’s really going on around her cracks open wider and wider.

3) If you were Alexa whom would you choose? Rylan and Damian? Both Rylan and Damian are incredible in their own ways and I love them both for different reasons. I’ll also say that Alexa surprised me with her decision at the end of DEFY.

4) What is your favorite passage in DEFY? My very favorite passage would give too much away, but I did really love writing the scene on pages 181-183!

5) What kind of research went into it writing the fight-training scenes for DEFY? This might discredit me, but I didn’t do any physical research, although I would like to someday! I basically envisioned the scenes like a movie in my head and researched terminology. Occasionally I would act it out to make sure it made physical sense. Then I asked my agent (who is a black belt) if how I’d written it was accurate. And when he said it was, I breathed a sigh of relief!

6) What if DEFY was optioned for a movie and you could pick the cast, whom would you choose for the top characters? This is an interesting question, because I envision my books like movies in my head and listen to soundtracks while I’m writing to help me channel the emotion I want. But with DEFY it’s been tricky finding the right fit for my characters, because they are all mixed heritage. I did try to come up with some options, and while none of them are perfect, these are some ideas:  http://www.pinterest.com/sarablarson/defy-dream-cast-just-for-kicks/  I also have a board just about the inspiration for the world of DEFY, if you want to check it out. http://www.pinterest.com/sarablarson/the-world-of-defy/

7) The King is a terrible being that one loves to hate, what inspired you to create such a vile character? That’s just how he came to me when I wrote the story. But he wasn’t always that awful. I think it’s important when you’re creating your villains to know the motivation for why they do what they do. I’m sure you’ve heard that we’re all the heroes of our own stories, and he is no exception. And I will say that you eventually do find out more about his backstory and how he came to be so vile.

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

About Sara:
Sara loves writing, reading, and dessert--but the order varies by the day. She wrote her first book in second grade about a woman who had a premature baby, complete with a "to scale" drawing of the baby's size--while her mom was pregnant. To say she was a bit precocious is putting it lightly. Now that she’s an adult, she writes books for teens that have magic and romance and kick-butt girls (and very few premature babies). She lives in Utah with her husband, two young sons and baby girl. She writes during naptime and the hours when most people are sleeping. Her husband claims that she should have a degree in "the art of multitasking." On occasion you will find her hiding in a bubble bath with a book and some Swedish Fish. she is represented by Josh Adams of Adams Literary and her YA debut DEFY is coming January '14 from Scholastic!
