Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

My Thoughts
When I first read about DEFY by Sarah B. Larson earlier this year I was left pining for it so badly that once it reached my hands it was quickly devoured and then I only wanted more, more, more.

Defy begins with a tragedy that turns an orphaned girl into a boy who one day becomes the greatest fighter in the king's army.
Alexa and her brother Marcel have done the impossible, keeping her true identity a secret and thus protecting her from the breeding house. This charade allows them both to become part of the royal guard of which Alexa greatly excels in. Then tragedy strikes again and Alexa soon finds her very existence threatened and with enemy's at the gate and villains within the palace walls she must guard her secret well or loose her head. But, secrets are always meant to be broken....and Alexa will be surprised as to how much that revelation will change her life.
If that premise does not instantly grab hold of you then maybe the attentions of two men, Rylan and Damian, who are vying for Alexa's heart will keep you entranced and reading into the wee small hours of the night. I know that I could not stop, despite the "love triangle" that seemed to be implied, in my heart there is really only one choice and you will have to read DEFY to find out.

I truly enjoyed DEFY because the story is well paced and intriguing, set within a world that has cruel politics and wicked magic. Include a character like Alexa who is strong and vulnerable in equal measure with a cast of suitors that you pine for and you have a winning combination for a most amazing read. How, I envy those that have not read this wonderful novel yet and I DEFY you not to enjoy it.

Fans of fantasy reads like Falling Kingdoms and Graceling will devour this novel and be left clamoring for more.
