In this new stand-alone novella from New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor comes the story of a romantic, funny, and fantastical first date. In Night of Cake & Puppets, Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone Trilogy--the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Told in alternating perspectives, it's the perfect love story for fans of the series and new readers alike.

Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her "rabid fairy," her "voodoo eyes" are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or "Violin Boy," her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to meet him, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It's a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter's night before finally leading him to the treasure: herself!

Violin Boy's not going to know what hit him.

My Thoughts:

When this novella was first announced I was giddy with anticipation because I am a huge fan of Laini Taylor. I have longed to get lost among the pages of her world and revel in the beauty and terror she so expertly reveals in her writing. A NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS, her companion novella to the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy is nothing short of amazing, a beautiful little story showcasing Zuzana (a character I adore to bits) and her single minded pursuit of a certain violin boy.

As I started reading this quaint little story I was instantly reminded why I adore Laini Taylor and I how much I have missed her writing. She has a lyrical quality to her work that is beautiful and romantic and to have this novella showcasing Zusana (karou's best friend) is a work of genius. Told in dual POV's with Zusana in the lead with the violin boy that she cannot stop thinking about.

Fans of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series will not be disappointed in this little gem of a read that is romantic and full of laughter and excitement of first encounters. It is the perfect read for a bit of happiness that reminds you of why you cannot wait for the next installment in this series.

Laini Taylor I bow down to your awesomeness and cannot wait for what comes next. Just goes to prove that a passionate heart, determination and little magic can go a very long way.

  1. This may well be the most romantic story I have ever read. Laini Taylor's imagination knows no bounds and that is a fabulous thing. I love her novels, but this is my favorite thing she's written so far. May every girl find her Mik and every boy his Zuzana.
