Luke is the perfect boyfriend: handsome, kind, fun. He and Emaline have been together all through high school in Colby, the beach town where they both grew up. But now, in the summer before college, Emaline wonders if perfect is good enough.

Enter Theo, a super-ambitious outsider, a New Yorker assisting on a documentary film about a reclusive local artist. Theo's sophisticated, exciting, and, best of all, he thinks Emaline is much too smart for Colby.

Emaline's mostly-absentee father, too, thinks Emaline should have a bigger life, and he's convinced that an Ivy League education is the only route to realizing her potential. Emaline is attracted to the bright future that Theo and her father promise. But she also clings to the deep roots of her loving mother, stepfather, and sisters. Can she ignore the pull of the happily familiar world of Colby?

Emaline wants the moon and more, but how can she balance where she comes from with where she's going?

Sarah Dessen's devoted fans will welcome this story of romance, yearning, and, finally, empowerment. It could only happen in the summer.

My Thoughts

Summertime. That glorious time of year filled with long lazy days of sun, fun and splendid reading material. And no summer would be complete without a Sarah Dessen novel that you could get totally lost in. Lucky for everyone, Sarah Dessen has just released THE MOON and MORE. A story filled with life altering events that occur over the course of one summer.

Emaline is college bound teen counting down the days until she is out of her small home town and off to college. Or is she?

On the surface Emaline seems to have the perfect existence: A loving family, gorgeous boyfriend and friends that would do anything for her. Then, over the course of one summer everything changes.

My favorite quote:

"The mistakes you make now count. Not for everything, and not forever. But they do matter, and they shape you. If you take nothing else from what I've been through, at least remember this: make your choices well. Because you'll always be accountable for them. That's what being an adult is all about."

Sarah Dessen is brilliant by creating a story that is subtle and well rounded. Filled with endearing characters and a protagonist that is smart, thoughtful and memorable. THE MOON AND MORE does not have a storyline that is fast paced or an ending that rides on an ever building crescendo. Yet, it is compelling on a different level proving that we control our destiny and although we may have our future planned out it's okay to stray from what feels safe to venture into the unknown.

THE MOON AND MORE is a great choice for easy Summer reading pleasure and any other reading in between.

  2. I've been a Sarah Dessen fan for quite a while, so I was excited to see she was releasing a new book. However, after reading this one I was rather disappointed. The plot and character development were seriously lacking, and the storyline wasn't as enchanting as her previous books. Overall, I found it kind of a boring read. Would recommend reading The Truth About Forever, This Lullaby, or Dreamland instead.
