After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

My Thoughts:

THE 5th WAVE, by Rick Yancey is one of the most frightening and intriguing novels that I have had the pleasure of reading this year. And that is saying alot because sci-fi is not my favored genre, yet I could not stop thinking about this book once I finished reading it. Now, I want to know what happens next.

In the beginning this story concentrates on the female protagonist, Cassie.  And as I got to know her story I realized that she is the midst of the 4th wave. As her journey progresses I come to understand how the world now exists, the devastation of that each wave brought down on earth and how humanity is so very close to extinction. I was truly absorbed into the story when it changed POV's and I have to admit that I did not care for the initial shift to other characters but it gives insight to what is going on in other factions of their fractured society.

As the POV's switch between the four main characters you can see how the world we know is now in ruins due to the four waves that have come from another world. Now,  the aliens are in the end stages of THE 5th WAVE, the final attack on human kind and the realization of what they have done to get to this point is mind blowing. I thought that the other waves were insane but it is nothing compared to what is coming.

Rick Yancey has done a fantastic job of creating a world that is original and so unbelievably frightening at it's very core. Not only is this novel well paced but it features a world unlike anything I have ever seen befoe. The idea that we are totally ill equipped and unprepared for a most viciously diabolical alien attack still plagues my sleep and I am left unsettled.

I highly recommend this novel to lovers of all things sci-fi for it has the perfect mix of adventure, intrigue and nail biting tension that will leave you breathless and glued to your book.
