Review: I AM NUMBER FOUR: The Lost Files: The Legacies

I AM NUMBER FOUR: The Lost Files: The Legacies
Pittacus Lore
Paperback: 320 pages

Rating:  ♥♥♥♥♥

The Fallen Legacies:
Before Number Four, there were One, Two, and Three. Until now we've only known that the Mogadorians caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. But all of that is about to change.

In i am number four: the lost files: the fallen legacies, you'll learn the true story behind these ill-fated members of the Garde. Before they were murdered by the Mogadorians, before Number Four was next, they were all just kids on an alien planet called Earth—discovering their powers, trying to stay hidden, and running for their lives.

My Thoughts:

Years ago when I decided to broaden my reading horizons I chose I AM NUMBER FOUR as my first attempt at sci-fi. Although I know that it is considered sci-fi light, I really did enjoy it for it was an entertaining story focused on a premise that was unique and endearing. Now, the third book in this series THE RISE OF NINE, will soon hit book shelves everywhere but in the mean time I AM NUMBER FOUR: The Lost Files is centered on the first three deceased Lorian citizens and their legacies along with the back story for number six and nine.

I AM NUMBER FOUR: The Lost Files is the perfect read for those fans of the series like I am. It was an honest, pathos filled adventure partly focused on the legacies bestowed upon the deceased Lorian exiled members. I found the manner in which those legacies were chronicled to be ingenious and very engaging. I will not go into detail because I don't want to spoil this well written favorite bit but I enjoyed it despite the fact that I know how their stories ended. Well played.

The other sections of this book concentrate on number six and number nine respectively.  I always wanted to know more about Six's back story and so I was very excited to read about her and her Cepan and how she came to be the killer, kick-ass character that she is when this series began. Although I find her to be the most fascinating character within this series I am now totally fan girling over number nine. His story was intense, highlighted with moments of anguish that was amazing to witness. I could not get enough of his story and as soon as I was finished I wanted to go back for more.

As previously stated, fans of this series will seriously adore this. Their is a lot of new material that will satisfy and keep you engaged until the next book comes out in August.

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men—thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My Thoughts:

Have you ever had a book that was so riveting that you could not think of anything else when finished it? and the very thought of picking up another book felt like I was cheating on boyfriend. Well, THRONE OF GLASS by Sarah J. Mass is simply put, that book. From the very first page until the very last you will be completely absorbed into a world that is engrossing that showcases a heroine unlike any other.

WOW! was all I could say as I read this book because it was pure brilliance, perfectly detailed and so well visualized that I could actually see a movie playing out in my head. I knew instantly from the very first moment Celaena comes onto the scene that she was a force to be reckoned with. A trained assassin left to rot in prison but one day is given a pardon of sorts to compete and become the King's champion. She reluctantly agrees and is less than happy with her guard, Westfall that does not trust her in the least. Once she arrives in court she trains hard and meets her competitors,  but it is not long before the competition begins to die off in the most gruesome of manners and Celaena decides that she needs to find out what is killing off the competition before it attacks her next. Meanwhile she is beginning to enjoy her life, she finally has a friends and a love interest that completely surprises her.

Celaena as far as I am concerned is the most kick-ass female character I have ever had the pleasure of reading. She is a flippin' trained assassin, feared by many and rightfully so because she knows what she is doing. I am amazed at how she can run down a scenario that leaves all her opponents dead. You gotta love that, I know I surely do. She is smart and quick tempered but her guard Westfall seems to know how to push her and make her think about what she is doing. Together they have some of the best tension filled moments that leave me constantly pining for more. But, that is where Prince Dorian comes into play. He is the son of a crazed tyrant that knows how to play the game and he certainly wants to play with Celaena, now their interactions are well worth every word and you will be left begging for more. I only wish things would have ended in a different manner and that I can say is my only gripe with this whole story. I am not a great fan of love triangles but this one was done quite well, subtle and not overbearing.

If you're a fan of the fantasy genre than this book is a perfect read, with just the right touches of mystery, romance and great bit of fighting. Memorable characters with a unique story line that will have you thinking about it for a long while and then you will be left pining for more.

Until the release of THRONE OF GLASS on August 7, 2012 you can read the four novella's leading up to it. I know I have and I loved every single one of them.

Within the walls of Baalboden, beneath the shadow of the city’s brutal leader, Rachel Adams has a secret. While other girls sew dresses, host dinner parties, and obey their male Protectors, Rachel knows how to survive in the wilderness and deftly wield a sword. When her father, Jared, fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector, her father’s apprentice, Logan—the same boy Rachel declared her love for two years ago, and the same boy who handed her heart right back to her. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself. But treason against the Commander carries a heavy price, and what awaits her in the Wasteland could destroy her.

At nineteen, Logan McEntire is many things. Orphan. Outcast. Inventor. As apprentice to the city’s top courier, Logan is focused on learning his trade so he can escape the tyranny of Baalboden. But his plan never included being responsible for his mentor’s impulsive daughter. Logan is determined to protect her, but when his escape plan goes wrong and Rachel pays the price, he realizes he has more at stake than disappointing Jared.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

My Thoughts:

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I decided that I would only read Fantasy novels for a week. So, when I picked up DEFIANCE by C.J. Redwine I had not idea but how completely blown away I would be from the magnitude of brilliance that this novel is.

The world that DEFIANCE is set in is quite bleak and savage with it's inhabitants living in a walled city ruled by a ruthless and cunning commander. Those that live within these walls escapes the evil monster that would eagerly devour them on the outside, but to stay means dealing with a different kind of monster all together. The Commander is that monster, and let me just tell you in all of the books I have read that man is the most evil twisted tyrant around, he even gives President Snow a run for his money. But guess what? I love it. I love that fact that I could feel so passionately about a character that every time I see him on the page I am always wishing for his painful demise. He is compelling and most of what spurs this story forward is the hatred directed at him.  That is where Rachel Adams fits into this magnificent story. When her father fails to return home from a great mission she is awarded custody to her father's apprentice, Logan. A fact she cannot fathom despite the fact she once harbored deep feelings for him....feelings that were not reciprocated. Unable to stand her new situation she decides to do the unthinkable and escape to find her father and that is when all hell breaks loose and this story takes on a wicked turn and that is when the adventure truly begins.

To say that I was stuck to this story like cling wrap would be an understatement. I forgot to eat, did not want to sleep until I read every last word and even after the last word was read I wished I had more to go on. Not only was the world well detailed and richly visualized but it's characters really stole my heart. Rachel was an amazing character full of spirit and drive, at the beginning she seemed like such a willfully spoiled child and when a few events nearly defeat her she manages to come through like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. I enjoyed the frankness of how she dealt with certain situations, because they felt honest and believable. Now, I can talk about Logan...ahhh with Logan I can say that he personifies a character that I most appreciate. Smart, honest and dedicated without sacrificing any of the smexy. I adored his inner turmoil and how he finally accepted the inevitable... It was my favorite moment in this book, and believe me I had plenty. I really enjoyed the fact that this novel is just the beginning and that I see potential for even greater story telling ahead and you know what? I say bring it on!!

DEFIANCE has everything that anyone could want to read in a story. It has a evil tyrant, a defiant girl who wants to kick ass and her love interest that is crazy smart inventor that you cannot help but adore all sent in a fantastic new world that will ensnare you. A must read for 2012 and I defy you not to read it.

Paging Dr. Frankenstien: YOUNG ADULT STYLE

Frankenstein, although popularized in films many years ago was originally created by Mary Shelley, who was only 21 years old when her masterpiece was published in 1818. The daughter of a prominent feminist, she centered her plot around an arrogant doctor, Victor Frankenstein,  who dared to play God by creating human life but refusing to take responsibility for it. A most fascinating story, ahead of it's time and It is no wonder that many years later we are still enthralled with this character and the pathos generated towards the "monster" that he created.

Recently I have noted that Dr. Frankenstein is making a comeback with several YA novels. This trend began last year with THIS DARK ENDEAVOR by Kenneth Oppel a novel that is  beautifully written as it is romantically dark and wicked. It's sequel, SUCH WICKED INTENT is due out in book stores next month, along with MONSTER by Dave Zeltserman. Then early next year Dr. Frankenstein's Daughters by Suzanne Weyn. I always enjoy a story seeped in Gothic creepiness so I am most excited for these upcoming novels. I just may have to leave the lights on.

When he and Elizabeth discover a portal into the spirit world, they cannot resist.
