Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart

My Thoughts:

Of all the FIERCE READS novels this year Leigh Bardugo's SHADOW AND BONE has been my most eagerly awaited read. I believed the concept of this story to be intriguing, infused with darkness and romance that I always crave.

When I began reading SHADOW AND BONE I became immediately invested within this story. I could conceptualize this raw and unexplored world of Ravka and wanted to know more. Especially when it came to the inner domain of the Grisha population and their customs, wardrobes and specialized talents. Leigh Bardugo did a good job of bringing this world to life on the written page, making it visually rich and tactile.

Alina Starkov proved to be the most reluctant of heroines, sequestering a power that she could not command or comprehend. It is her journey into the world of Grisha and her ultimate acceptance of her power that keeps you riveted to the page. But she isn't the only character that keeps you entranced. In fact, this book has a whole slew of characters that are memorable and endearing but I could not seem to get enough of The Darkling.  He dominated every scene that he was involved in and despite his obvious wickedness I still wanted more.

Despite my adoration for this book I felt as if I was lightly treading into this new territory and wished to be deeper ensconced within it. I will also expected a grander finale to this novel because I felt that the build up was leading to something of epic proportions but it didn't quite reach that level. Yet,  I was still glued to my book for dear life and could not be disturbed until the very last word.

SHADOW AND BONE is a fine FIERCE READ That will keep you entertained and eagerly wanting more. Be sure to see Leigh Bardugo and the other amazing authors on this tour.

  1. Hooray for awesomely entrancing characters and a wonderous world to explore. :) Cannot wait for this book! I've been told it's Hardcover worthy...there's still time to pre-order!

  2. I REALLY liked this one-- am super excited for more in this world! I feel like that big ending we were both hoping for is coming in the sequels

  3. This ones been sitting on my shelf forever. I'm tempted to leave it there a bit longer just so I don't have such a long wait between books. I'm not sure I can resist, though, it sounds so good and I'm hearing nothing but good things.

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
