One choice

One choice decides your friends, defines your beliefs, and determines your loyalties . . . forever.

Or, one choice can transform you.

In Veronica Roth’s debut novel, Divergent, a perfect society unfolds into a dystopian world of electrifying decisions, stunning consequences, heartbreaking betrayals, and unexpected romance

MY THOUGHTS

Divergent is unlike anything I have read before, an all consuming dystopian novel that I still cannot stop thinking about it. Veronica Roth has created a a truly fascinating and brutal tale that will leave you stunned and clamoring for more.

As I began reading Divergent I was extremely pleased at how quickly I became acquainted with the intricacies of this new world. This story hits the ground running yet everything was well detailed and explained without ever being over redundant or boring. Beatrice Prior belongs to a society that makes all of it's sixteen-year-olds select what path they want to live out the rest of their lives and she has five factions to choose from: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). She was raised in the Abnegation faction, but never truly felt it's teachings guide her every thought, she craved more and when the faction selection process provided her with surprising results that she must keep secret and she takes a chance and makes a startling decision. What ensues next is the "daunting" journey that we experience alongside Beatrice and her fellow initiates. This new world that they encounter is cruel and frightening and with each challenge we witness Beatrice grow and develop into a character that you can admire and understand.

With dystopian novels ever increasing in publication popularity it is satisfying to encounter a novel that was as riveting as this book. I appreciated this new world that was presented and as the mystery of Beatrice being a Divergent came to light I could not believe where it then took me and the climactic ending left me shell shocked. I cannot wait to see what happens next, but the idea of having to wait a year seems more than I can bear.

Divergent is what amazing storytelling is all about, pefect pacing, memorable characters and riveting words. I literally picked up it up and could NOT put it down and every time I tried to give myself a break I found that I could not stay away for more than a few minutes, unwilling to stop until I read the very last word. If you only read one book this year then Divergent is that book and you will not be sorry.

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
