Cover Look: Does a change make a difference?

I admit that an amazing book cover will always get my attention first, then I read the back cover and a few pages within the first chapter to finally make up my mind. So, even though I am drawn to a gorgeous book jacket like a moth to a flame, ultimately it is not the deciding factor in selecting said book. Lately I have noticed some of my favorite reads are returning to the shelves with face lifts, especially those that are involved in a successful series. One thing I dislike is when a series is released and you purchase the book and it sits on your book shelf for you to enjoy, then at some point in the series they go and change the cover art. Arrrggg!!! For me it is frustrating but I am curious to know what others think?

What cover art that has changed has bothered you? Or haven't you minded the changes? Has there been a series that the cover art hasn't changed for? Or do you think the changes have been for the best?

She's So Dead to Us by Kieran Scott

SIREN by Tricia Rayburn

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

Hold Still by Nina LaCour

  1. It does bug me when they change the cover of I book I bought with a different one. But it's true that some change for the best, though some do for the worse. If the book's a standalone, then it's fine, but if it's in a series, then I'll get furious, because now my covers won't match!

  2. I agree with the series thing, that really gets to me. For some of these covers that you posted I actually like the first ones better!

  3. I like the paperback versions of pretty much all of them more than the hardcover, though I enjoyed the hardcovers too. I especially like Siren's facelift- the hardcover was creepy and it's cool, but I really like the feeling of the paperback.

  4. To me it really depends on the new cover. If I like it, everything's fine, if I dislike it I'll probably get angry at the publisher and complain about it alot.
The Siren remake for example is horrible I think! The first cover was so unique but the new one(s) are just bleak and boring.
On the other hand I really like the remakes of The Sky Is Everywhere.
