Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.
Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

The Iron King was one of my favorite reads for this year so you could only imagine my delight as I settled in and got reacquainted with Julia Kagawa's world of faery magic, danger and love with The Iron Daughter.

It wasn't long before I was soon gripping my book for all it was worth because I was instantly swept away into Meghan's world of constant adventure. I was her never silent co-pilot as she maneuvered around from the Winter court to the Silicon Valley and all the places in between. The constant motion of this story was never ending and exciting and I could not ask for more. Meghan's moments with Ash are some of my favorites because they pulled on my emotions and made me twist in the wind better than any book that I have read in a while. Then just when I think I am okay with my everything another declares his emotions for Meghan and I am more confused than ever, although I knew it was coming. Ah, love is never easy.

One of the reasons I enjoy this series so much is because of it's unforgettable cast of characters: from the wicked Queen Mab to the eternally mischievous Puck. These players conjoined creates some of the best story lines around and the introduction of new characters only enhanced this story to make it shine. I commend Julie Kagawa for creating a story of Faery lore combined with a modern twist that is authentic and originally inventive and I cannot wait to see what the series conclusion will be. I only know that I want The Iron Queen NOW!! because the wait is killing me.

Although I adore this series and cannot wait for the next novel I have a bit of an issue with the lack of attention that was given to Meghan's new found ability. Where did she get it? What is she going to do with it and how will it effect her future and all of those around he?. I hope that It will all come out in the next novel, The Iron Queen, because I am a bit puzzled with the whole Pink Elephant factor in regards to what Meghan Chase is all about.

That being said, The Iron Daughter is still a favorite read and will always have my vote of approval. This is a highly recommend series for all ages and I know that it's fans will attest to this. So, if you haven't read this series yet then you need to and you will not be disappointed.

If you had to choose between Heaven and Hell, which would it be?

Are you sure about that...?

Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a wicked streak. She's spent years keeping everyone at a distance--even her closest friends--and it seems her senior year will be more of the same...until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him. What she doesn't know is that Luc works in Acquisitions--for Hell--and she possesses a unique skill set that has the king of Hell tingling with anticipation. All Luc has to do is get her to sin, and he's as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn't stand a chance.

Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and the angel, Gabe, is going to do whatever it takes to make sure that Luc doesn't get what he came for. And it isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just her soul.

But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay...for all of them.

Upon reading the synopsis for PERSONAL DEMONS I knew that I wanted to read it because it had certain elements that I enjoy in a book: the battle between good and evil, otherwordly hot boys, mystery and an ordinary girl (well..not so ordinary) that is oblivious to all the danger surrounding her. So, you can see how I found this story hard to resist and devoured it once I got it into my waiting hands.

Yet, as I began PERSONAL DEMONS I had a difficult time associating with Frannie for I felt her development was a bit anemic and I did not want to invest in her future. Then as the story progressed I felt my feeling slightly shift because Frannie's power is unique and I am eager to see how her "gift" is ultimately used and what it will mean for everyone involved, good or evil. On the other hand, Luc proved to be the character that I enjoyed seeing the most 0n the the pages. I liked witnessing his journey and how he struggled with his baser insticts. He had a wicked side, and of course he would for he was the soul wrangler from hell but once he began his pursuit of Frannie's soul it was not long before his feelings for her thwarted his mission and he was left a changed being. His character overhaul worked wonderfully with the story line and became totally believable. As for Gabe, I felt that he was somehow incomplete because I did not get see his POV as I had with the other two main characters. Although I can understand the why's of that concept due to how the story progressed, I still would have preferred witnessing his POV.

I feel that the story concept for PERSONAL DEMONS is unlike anything that I have read before because it has some wickedly charged moments that are breath catching and truly entertaining while keeping you on the edge of your seat. It is a good start to a new series. A story between Heaven and Hell and how they both want a certain girl, you will find yourself tempted by both sides: good and evil, and never feel so conflicted in your life. Which side would you choose?

Sneak a Peek Saturday: Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Sneak a Peek Saturday is a feature that lets "peek" into an upcoming book. Sometimes it is a chapter or two or maybe more.

This week I have selected ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by debut author Beth Revis. This Sci-fi novel is being toted as a sci-fi novel for teens that don't like sci-fi and since I fall into that category (except for being a teen) I was sceptically intrigued. Yet, once I read the first chapter I was left bereft of words and only wanted to read more. Let's see what you think? Just click on the image below and you will have the opportunity to read the first chapter of this amazing new book.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone—one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship—tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now, Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming

REVIEW: MINDER by Kate Kaynak

MINDER by Kate Kaynak
  • Paperback: 264 pages
  • Publisher: Spencer Hill Press (June 18, 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0984531106
  • ISBN-13: 978-0984531103
  • Cover: Simple and effective

  • Rating: YYY

The first few sentences will fill you with a sense of dread, the very idea unimaginable but by the time you finish the first chapter you will be left saying "YES! justice is served but WTF just happened".

Debut author Kate Kaynak has penned a novel that has an original and cerebral concept.

MINDER is a story about sixteen-year-old Maddie Dunn, an ordinary girl that finds out that she has a most extraordinary and deadly ability during a rape attack. She does not know how or why it happened all she knows is that three boys are now dead because of her and before she can make sense of anything she encounters Dr. Williamson and he has a proposition for her that she cannot refuse. He wants Maddie to join the Ganzfield program that he runs. It is a unique program for people with special abilities and once Maddie gets there she finds out that she is a MINDER, a person capable of wicked mind control. As Maddie tries to adjust to this new found information about herself she encounters the other teens at Ganzfield and some have even more terrifying abilities then her own and It is not long before she makes some dangerous enemies. Then she meets Trevor, a boy that has the ability to burn buildings with a stray thought, and soon she looses her heart. Unfortunately there are outside forces that want to destroy Ganzfield and all of its inhabitants.

As I began reading MINDER I was completely pulled into it. I found the story to have a unique twisted edge that I really enjoyed. Then as the story progressed so did the love interest between Maddie and Trevor and it began to wear on me. If anything I always want more romance in a story but their moments were ridiculously sappy to the point that I did not think I could take much more. Thankfully the story shifted into an new direction and I was able to continue until it's gripping and exciting end. I would like to read the next book in the series which is called ADVERSARY because I believe that this series has great potential.

For those that are interested in a paranormal read with a different edge and romance than this is a good series for you.

    I got bit.

    I got bit.

    I got bit.

Three little words never had such a profound meaning.

As I began reading Raised By Wolves I begrudgingly uttered "not another werewolf book" but before the first chapter was completed I was held a captive audience between it's pages. I could not get enough of this story and did not stop until I reached the last page only to feel the loss of having it end.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes has crafted a story that is by far one of the most well written and engaging young adult paranormal novels around. It is full of twists and unexpected turns that are brilliantly conceived and delivered.

Bronwyn Alessia St. Vincent Clare is a teenage girl that was raised by wolves, since the tender age of four, when a rabid werewolf went rogue and killed her entire family. She was saved by Callum, the Alpha of the territory who gave her to the only other human in his wolf pack to raise as their own daughter. You would have thought that being raised by wolves would have made Bryn obedient, responsible and terrified but nothing could have been further from the truth. At a young age she closed her bond off from the members of the pack, wanting to be her own person without having to obey pack laws and as she got older she constantly pushed her limits. When Callum orders that Bryn come home before dark and has his body guards become her shadow she knows that something is wrong but no one will tell her what is going on. Bryn decides to take matters into her own hands and her actions set off a chain of events that have her finding Chase: a caged young man that changes into a Wolfe before her very eyes. A confession is made and Bryn cannot believe what she hears.

    I Got Bit.

Those words connect her to Chase and she feels compelled to see him again but not until she meets Callum's demands...and the price for breaking any of them are greater than anything Bryn could have imagined. Despite that fact she cannot help the pull that she has towards Chase and that he is the only one to have the answers to her desperately needed questions. Allegiances to her pack be damned no matter the consequences.

Raised by Wolves is a story that tugged at my heart and pulled on my emotions in such a way that I was left speechless while other moments I went all primal with shouts and growls of protests. Bryn's proved to be a worthy heroine that is smart and "scrappy" as her need to remain independent from the pack is paramount and while you may not agree with her actions you can understand exactly where she is coming from. I admired how Jennifer Lynn Barnes was able to convey Bryn's emotions so clearly that there were passages that were utterly palpable. Besides enjoying Bryn's character I totally adored her best friend Devon. How original to have a werewolf (who could be an alpha someday) be totally metro sexual while constantly pulling upon beloved movie characters and dialogue to express himself. Yet, Devon is just a favorite among a cast of many characters that lend to this story's magnetism.

The only complaint that I have is the immediate connection between Bryn and Chase because it seemed a bit too fast-too soon, but as the story unfolded I was able to comprehend their kindred joining.

I highly recommend Raised by Wolves to those readers that love a great paranormal book because it is an intricate story, full of action, romance and literary magic that will leave you gripping your book as the enormous plot builds and explodes unfalteringly before your very eyes.

Author Interview with Rebecca Maizel, author of INIFINITE DAYS

Today I have the pleasure of hosting an interview with Rebecca Maizel the author of Infinite Days one of my favorite reads for this year. Infinite Days redefines the typical vampire story and sets it on its own unique path thus creating something truly special. So, sit back-relax and enjoy her visit
RR: I know this question probably has been asked loads of times but what is your debut novel, Infinite Days about?
Infinite Days is about a 592 year old vampire who gets a second chance at humanity. She's been a ruthless killer for so long that when her vampire sire, Rhode, offers to perform a ritual which makes her human again, she jumps at the chance. I have said this in other interviews but Infinite Days is about coming out of the darkness, running away from the evil that is vampirism and instead embracing humanity.
RR: What inspired you to write Infinite Days, for it is a well depicted and darkly romantic vampire tale unlike anything else before it?
Thank you! Lenah inspired the story. She had this very specific, voice, a tortured voice and she wanted to tell her story. 8 months later I had Infinite Days! (I edited the hell out of it don't get me wrong...) I think if you can free write, do writing exercises and find a character who must tell a story, your work will be motivated by the character's decision and less the plot.
RR: Lenah has had a very long life and as you read her story you are witness to her extensive journey. What kind of research did you do to accomplish such a great job.
Librarians are YOUR FRIENDS. Reference librarians are even BETTER friends. I exhausted librarians from around the world to help me. Specifically the local librarians in Girvan Scotland. :)
RR: Is Infinite Days part of a series and if so how many other books do you plan on writing in Lenah's story arc?
There are three books in the Vampire Queen trilogy. I am finishing the sequel now :)
RR: Will we ever see Rhode again? ( can't help asking that one. He is my favorite)
Ohhhh....:) You will have to pick up the final copy of Infinite Days to find out the answer to that one. If you look in the back there is the prologue and opening chapter of book 2.
RR: Do you have any other novels that you would like to write?
I am currently in the middle of a realistic novel set on Cape Cod. :)
RR: What is on your nightstand now?
    Tiger Eyes - Judy Blume
    Nightshade - Andrea Cremer
    The Mockingbirds - Daisy Whitney
RR: How can fans find you?
I'll usually write you back within a couple of days. :)
RR: Thank you for stopping Tales of a Ravenous Reader blog. I wish you much success with Infinite Days and all your subsequent novels.

    Thank you!!!

    My review of Infinite Days

Waiting on Wednesday: Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton

Jill over at Breaking the Spine started this and I believe that it's awesome" This blog post is to alert those that visit about "the" book that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

This week I have selected Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton. The cover has a gothic feel that leaves me with chills and the novel blurb is wicked good. I cannot wait to read this one for my tastes run into the darker side.

This is my WOW for the week. What is yours?

Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.

Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.

She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very…different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.

Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.

CONTEST: Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Hello Hello...I have been blessed with a special package that included a copy of Clockwork Angel and since I have another copy from BEA I wanted to give someone a chance to win it. Since the book comes out soon it will be a short contest, but the more entries included the more goodies I get to add to the pot-o-prizes (more books and swag)

    1) Spread the word, i.e. twitter, face book, blogs...

    2) Leave a comment and tell me why you want this amazing novel

    3) This contest ends Friday the 13th of August (midnight)

    4) This contest is open Internationally

What are you waiting for? GOOD LUCK!!
