Author Event Photos: John Green and David Levithan and more

This past Monday I had the privilege of attending an author event that I was very excited about. I went to see John Green and David Levithan co-authors of Will Grayson, Will Grayson (one of my favorite reads). I showed up two hours before the start of the event to find that there were fifty people ahead of me and by the end of the evening there were 300 people in attendance. WOW!!!

I not only had a chance to listen to John and David read parts of WG, WG but I also bore witness to debut author, Daisy Whitney (THE MOCKINGBIRDS...i got to see her ARC and it is so pretty) assisting them with a few lines which was so much fun to see and hear.
I am also very fortunate to live in an area that has some of the best YA writers around and I was able to say hello to C.J. Omolalu, Sarah Quigley, Jandy Nelson, Nina LaCour and Heidi Kling. Gotta give props to them for they are very supportive of author events :)
I also had a chance to see my fellow blogger peeps Zoe and Alicia and as always it is wonderful to see them because we love to chat about books and our favorite authors. The only negative blip I had in the night was the reason I did not have many more photos to present, but that is another issue to discuss at a later date.

So, without further delay here are my favorite pictures from the night. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
David Levithan reading the part of TINY Cooper, priceless!!

David and John taking photo poses because they could not take pictures with anyone due to the sheer volume of attendees

Daisy Whitney (reading as Jane) with John (reading as OWG)

The trio of authors getting into the reading for Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Since we could not take pictures with John and David. I promised Zoe I would take a few with her talking to them both.

San Francisco, bay area author LOVE!!! C.J. Omololu, Jandy Nelson, Heidi Kling and Nina LaCour

Waiting on Wednesday: INFINITY by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Jill over at Breaking the Spine started this and I believe that it's awesome" This blog post is to alert those that visit about "the" book that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

I adore Sherrilyn Kenyon and have been reading her books for years and her Dark Hunter series are one of my favorites. So, you can imagine my joy at finding out about a YA series that involves that wonderful and exciting world. Less than a month to go and I cannot wait.

At fourteen, Nick Gautier thinks he knows everything about the world around him. Streetwise, tough and savvy, his quick sarcasm is the stuff of legends. . .until the night when his best friends try to kill him. Saved by a mysterious warrior who has more fighting skills than Chuck Norris, Nick is sucked into the realm of the Dark-Hunters: immortal vampire slayers who risk everything to save humanity.

Nick quickly learns that the human world is only a veil for a much larger and more dangerous one: a world where the captain of the football team is a werewolf and the girl he has a crush on goes out at night to stake the undead.

But before he can even learn the rules of this new world, his fellow students are turning into flesh eating zombies. And he’s next on the menu.

As if starting high school isn't hard enough. . .now Nick has to hide his new friends from his mom, his chainsaw from the principal, and keep the zombies and the demon Simi from eating his brains, all without getting grounded or suspended. How in the world is he supposed to do that?

REVIEW: WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON by John Green and David Levithan

WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON by John Green and David Levithan

  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Hardcover: 304 pages
  • Publisher: Dutton Juvenile (April 6, 2010)

"The hills are alive with the words of WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON"

Could I adore a book more fervently and completely? I think NOT! Never have I laughed so much or empathized with the characters so well as I have with this phenomenal book. It is just so much "...ER" than anything I have read this year: better, smarter, funnier...

John Green and David Levithan have created a brilliant read in which I would not change a single word. I am in complete awe of how these two author word gods came together to give us a story that is literary magic infused with the GLEEful spirit.

WILL GRAYSON, WILL GRAYSON is a story about two angst-filled teens confused about life to epic proportions and both named Will Grayson. One night they meet each other in a most unlikely place. The road that leads them to one another and the paths in which they take afterwards are thus intertwined giving us a story that is endearing, full of comic relief mixed with moments of brutal honesty.

Will Grayson #1 is my favorite of the two Will's. He lives by the his self imposed rules of A) Don't care too much and B) Shut Up. It is his survival guide to living a life less ordinary which I believe is impossible when your best friend is TINY Cooper (who is amazing) and he is anything but Tiny and flamboyantly gay. Will Grayson #1 has some of the best lines and moments within the story and his *ten minutes of truth game* was brilliant. I loved seeing how he would work himself into these awkward moments that were just painful to witness. Will Grayson #2 is bitter, cruel and depressed. Completely convinced that he messes everything up in life and he was a bit tougher to understand and appreciate but he did sneak his way into my heart. His inner dialogue was priceless and I was glad that he experienced some personal growth that made him deal with some of those personal demons.

Did I forget to mention that the story has musical play that culminates the end of this book and it is the perfect ending to a story that was well rounded with a cast of characters that I wanted to be a part of my life. Will Grayson is a perfect story about friendships, relationships and moments in life that can shape us and make it extraordinary.

I adored this book and would recommend it to anyone in search of some thing deeper and more meaningful all the while causing your heart to bleed while laughing at the same time.

    One of my favorite lines:

"You like someone who can't like you back because unrequited love can be survived in a way that once-requited love cannot."

I cannot wait to meet both of these authors next Monday in San Francisco. It is going to ROCK!!

    REVIEW: WHISPER by Phoebe Kitanidis

    WHISPER by Phoebe Katanidis
  • Reading level: Young Adult
  • Hardcover: 288 pages
  • Publisher: Balzer + Bray (April 27, 2010)

  • REVIEW YY 1/2

Whisper is a book that has an interesting premise that promises to be an original and intriguing read. The concept of being able to hear every one's thoughts and the power that comes with that ability....wicked cool.

"I wish she knew how pretty she was...."

"I hope she didn't find out what Ben said about her...."

or is this ability all it is cracked up to be? is it more of a curse than a blessing? both sides of coin are explored in this new paranormal YA read.

Whisper is a story mainly centering on Joy, a girl that has the ability to hear whispers. She can hear every one's inner thoughts, their wishes both good and bad. Joy is not the only one with this "gift" her older sister Jessica also has the same ability, but while Joy uses her power to appease the people in her life her sister Jessica uses it to make them miserable. Joy cannot understand why her sister is this way, they used to be close and now they are more like strangers. Then one night Joy begins to hear Jessica's voice and the message terrifies her and she knows her sister is in danger and that she has to save her. As she begins this daunting journey she encounters a boy that has some very dark secrets of his own and together they realize that whispers are not always best kept silent.

When I read about this book I knew it was something that I had to read. It's premise sounded great and I even had to ask myself what would I do with this power..hmmmm...I was intrigued. Unfortunately I had some issues with WHISPER. I am not sure if it is fact that it had some plot holes or that it had scattered pacing or that it had such promise and fell short, take your pick. I don't want to read a book that makes me question, huh? I did appreciate how Phoebe Katanidis wrote about Joy and her growth and how she learned that while she used her powers to please others she essentially lost herself and did not know how to function properly in social situations unless she used her ability. I only wished it was explored a bit deeper.

    Magical Moments with Gayle Forman

Gayle came to A GREAT GOOD PLACE for BOOKS a quaint book store that sold over 100 copies of IF I STAY. Gayle was there to promote the the paperback release of IF I STAY and she gave a presenntation that was a mixture of select reading passages combined with musical selections mentioned in the book. I was left speechless and with a bit teary eyed and I was reminded of why I loved this book. Not only did I get to see Gayle but I also had the pleasure to hang with my friend Amanda, fellow blogger Alicia and 3 other bay area authors Jandy Nelson, Yvonne Prinze and Nina LaCoeur. One of the best bits of the night was Gayle's occasional slips about the sequel novel WHERE SHE WENT (letmetellyouIwantthisbooknow)

Gayle taking a break from reading and playing a cello piece
Alicia from Shooting Stars Mag getting to chat with Gayle
Gayle Forman and I. Curly Girls RULE!!
Yvonne Prinz of "Vinyl Princess", Gayle Forman "If I Stay", Jandy Nelson "The Sky is Everywhere" and Nina LaCour "Hold Still"
