Sneak a Peek Saturday is a feature that lets you "peek" into an upcoming book. Sometimes it is a chapter or two and maybe less.

This week I have selected WITHER by Lauren Destefano. Dystopian novels have been on the rise for a while now and I am so glad because these darker edged stories have been wonderfully engaging and thought provoking. After reading the synopsis for WITHER I was hooked and now an excerpt is available, just click on the book cover a little peek.

Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb—males only live to age twenty-five, and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.

When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden's genuine love for her, and a tenuous trust among her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape—to find her twin brother and go home.

But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden's eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant she trusts, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limited time she has left.

  2. Well written and informative review. I enjoy how you expounded about the characters and your feelings towards them. Despite it not being highly rated by you, I still got the feeling you liked it quite a bit. Its unique and creative, I think I'll still give it a try. I do like dystopian novels a lot though. If it fell into a different genre I may not have the same feelings.

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
