Online excerpt

There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

Fallen is an wonderful start to what looks like an epic story in the making. This novel is addictive despite having a slow start. Whenever I would put it down I could feel it's pull compelling me to keep reading it, and so I did.

I was engrossed in reading about Lucinda "Luce" and the mystery that surrounded her and could witness her journey within the drab school grounds of Sword and Cross. I could see the dilapidated walls, smell the rotting putrid air and feel the stifling imprisonment within those walls not to forget the dark shadows that constantly make their presence known. Amazing...for it is so richly descriptive.

Lauren Kate also did a fantastic job of writing fleshed out characters that made them easily to recognize and associate. Yet, I could not know what they would do next. I was continually left on tender hooks anticipating every move. It all added to the lush mystery that was the heart FALLEN. A mystery that I would have enjoyed more if I was not given so much information about this book prior to reading it. It is the one disappointment that I have about this novel. Everyone that reads the synopsis will already have half of the story handed to them, but despite that it will still hold you captive.

As I finished this book I was happy, for although Luce discovered the truth about Daniel and some of their history there is so much more beyond that knowledge that she has yet to realize. My goodness the implications...EPIC and where another character fits into all of this WOW. You will be left salivating for more. What a great set up for the next book TORMENT.

Fallen has everything I crave from a book: mystery with a supernatural edge and a compelling tale of forbidden romance, but it is a bit slow for my taste and i know I had to push myself to finish. This novel is a good start to a series that I hope will get better because it has such potential.
