Hardcover: 400 pages
Publisher: Scholastic Press (August 1, 2009)

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf--her wolf--is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human . . . until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human--or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

My Review YYYY 1/2

It was cold and the snow was on the ground as Grace played on her tire swing, not realizing the threat of danger that lurked in the edge of the woods of her backyard....Werewolves. They soon attacked Grace, dragging her off into the woods to make her their next meal, but before they could destroy her a yellow eyed wolf came to her rescue and once they locked eyes onto one another they would never be the same.

Years pass and every Winter thereafter Grace is obsessed with seeing her yellow eyed wolf that would come out to the edge of the woods and watch her. She would see him in the distance, his eyes mesmerizing, watching her watching him, but that is not enough for Grace who tries everything she can to entice him to come closer. She knows that she should be afraid even after Jack Culpepper, a fellow classmate died after a recent wolf attack, but the lure of the woods and her wolf compells her. Then contact with her wolf is made after six long years of watching and she revels in the feel of his thick fur, his unique scent and his sad eyes. Yet, this happiness is short lived

Once back at school she soon learns that an attack on the wolves is being organized by the towns people. She is sick with worry, what if they kill her beloved wolf? She tries in vain to create a diversion but it is no use. Defeated, Grace goes home to find a naked and injured man at her back door. A man with yellow eyes. A man she instinctively knows is HER wolf. Without hesitation, Grace rushes to help him and take him into her home and learns that his name is Sam and that he has been obsessed about her for as long as she has obsessed about him.

Grace and Sam soon begin a tenuous courtship because it is on a time clock. Sam is a wolf that only changes into that form when the temperature drops and Winter is fast approaching. Sam hesitant at first soon begins to tell Grace about his becoming a wolf and how he was cared for in his pack, how he loved his books and his mentor Beck. Grace in turn does not have much to reveal, she was a perfect child. Never causing her parents a worry, a fact that Sam found amazing since her parents were rarely around to even take care of her. A painful understanding is realized that Sam's season as a human is nearly over. A werewolf has only so many years before he changes with the cold and remains that way indefinitely.

As Sam and Grace are being drawn together, outside forces are pulling them apart. Sam realizes something horrible about Beck that impact how he feels about the pack. Grace's friend Olivia goes missing and Jack keeps making appearances to his sister Isabel. Questions are made that can forever change Sam and Grace's relationship and an opportunity presents itself.....but the snow is beginning to fall and the cold is setting in. Can Sam stay with Grace or will she loose him to the cold forever?

My Thoughts

I was drawn to SHIVER from very first sighting of Grace's Yellow eyed wolf. HER WOLF. The concept of a wolf changing form when the cold approaches was ingenious. Simply because it created this sense of urgency for this couple. The fact that it was Sam's last season as a human upped the ante even more. Can you imagine anything more heart breaking?? sniff sniff.

The story is told by her two main characters in alternating chapters, and you get to understand both of them, their distinct voices and characteristics. Their points of view are well executed and smoothly transitioned between chapters. Sam and Grace complement each other well and you want their love story to thrive. Their romance is all encompassing and passionate, touched by moments of pain, sorrow and happiness.

Maggie did a tremendous job of depicting the chemistry between Sam and Grace. Her writing ability amazing, as she showed us thru her words how to squeeze our hearts, to feel every touch, sense each glance and the believable love between a girl and her werewolf. Shiver had me reaching for my box of tissues (I suggest the one's with aloe vera in them) but it was a good cry and I would recommend this jewel of a love story to anyone young and old.

I can't believe I have to wait until 2010 to read Linger, the next book in the series, but I think in the meantime. I will read SHIVER again and again :)

So August 1st, run don't walk...RUN to your bookstore and get SHIVER
